Blood test negative HPT positive

Has this happened to anyone else.  I had a miscarriage in December and had bloodwork completed on Wednesday at day 21of my cycle to test my progesterone and thyroid levels.  They also tested for pregnancy and it was negative.  My levels for the the others were normal.  Today is day 28, my expected date for period and nothing.  So I just decided after work today to pee on a dollar store HPT...two pink lines, so I did my first response positive, went out to get clear blue digital and pregnant.  My doctors office is now closed and I will be calling first thing in the morning but wanted to see if this happened to anyone here.  After my D and C I'm very nervous....thanks ladies!

Re: Blood test negative HPT positive

  • Your blood test was probably too early! 3 positives is a positive! Congrats.

  • Sorry the PP is incorrect. Your blood test is most accurate, and should have a positive level if the tests truly are positive. Did they tell you your HCG level?

Depends on when she ovulated. Both test could be accurate.

OP- Test again in a day or so.  It could be pg or it could be a CP. Good luck.

That you all for you advice.  My husband thought it was too early but again I have no idea.  We are walking on the fine line until I get my blood taken again and talk with my doctor.  I am not the greatest with abbreviations...what does OP and CP mean?  Thanks ladies.

Did you read the OP? She had her blood tested on CD21. A BFP on CD28 could most certainly be accurate.

Ah! Sorry. If that's the case, then the blood test could've been early. Sorry, read wrong. I thought she had the blood test and the HPT on the same day. Sorry :S

    OP - Original Post/Poster

    CP- Chemical pregnancy

Hopefully CD 21 was around 7 DPO since they were testing your progesterone, if not your progesterone test was a waste.  Then again it would be a waste of time to test for pregnancy at 7 DPO, so I'm not convinced your doc understands the timing of these tests.

Assuming CD 21 was only 7 DPO a blood test would most likely be negative, since implantation probably hasn't occurred yet.  By CD 28 ( assumed 14 DPO) there is a good chance of getting a positive HPT if you are pregnant.

Sounds like you are probably pregnant, congrats!

  • YOU ARE PREGNANT! Congrats!

:) The blood test was too early. The home tests have come a long way and are very accurate. If you see a line, you are having a baby! :)

  • I agree with many of the PP's about the blood work likely being prior to implantation. And for 3 positive HPT you are either pregnant, OR have a specific form of testicular cancer that causes these tests to read positive (if you don't have testicles, then don't worry about the latter).
"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL
  • You are fine.  If you hypothetically ovulated at CD 14 you would be 7DPO when you had your blood test.  The average beta at 10 DPO is something like 12.  So at 7 DPO it could have EASILY been <5 (negative).  I would venture to guess that getting a positive beta at 7DPO is extraordinarily rare.

    Congrats on your pregnancy!

As you can see from the ticker, my bloodwork on Thursday indeed proved that I am pregnant with my 2nd.  Fingers crossed it continues to go well and I can welcome this little one into our family.  Thank you all for your kind words and advice.
