Chronic Cough?

Ok so I need some help. My son has had a pretty constant cough/rattle in his chest all winter long. He is in daycare daily. I have had him on antibiotics off and on and it will clear up and come right back. Now he is on Augmentin and it has taken away the cough at night but he still wakes with a terrible mucusy cough in the morning. I am wondering if this is normal? Could it be reflux? He does gag a lot when eating. But would morning mucusy cough be a part of that? My ped basically says that it is bronchitis and I am pushing for a more in depth look. He doesnt seem sick at all just always ratteling and coughing.

Re: Chronic Cough?

  • i know our lo did have bronchulitis (sp?), and our pedi told us if he had this there was a 2/3 chance he would have asthma later on in life (FTR, I have extreme allergies and semi serious asthma as well, one of my concerns when picking a pedi was that they have lots of allergy friendly knowledge). Our lo was diagnosed about a month later with seasonal allergies and asthma (again no big surprise, I'm allergic to basically outside this time of year, fun times!).  You may want to ask your pedi about this possibility, especially if allergies/asthma run in either of your families. Bronchiolitis. I'm not aware of the asthma/bronchiolitis connection but I'm sure it's possible.

OP, the most common cause of chronic cough is post nasal drip and if your LO has been fighting off illnesses all winter, it's possible he has some serious mucus going on. The other super common cause of cough is reflux and if your LO has that in his history, that could very well be the reason.
