Abnormal Pap

So my OB office just called to tell me that my pap smear came back abnormal. This has never happened to me before. It figures, since I haven't had one in four years. I lost insurance for a while then just never got around to making an appointment. Then I got pregnant. Obviously if it had been planned, I would have taken care of this beforehand. But it wasn't.

They told me they'll do a procedure which I can't remember the name of, ending in oscopy, during the second trimester. She said they'll take a closer look at my cervix.

Has anyone had experience with this? I'm trying not to worry, but you all know how that is.

Re: Abnormal Pap

  • Colposcopy.. Try not to stress. I've had a colposcopy done every 3 months for a year and a half because of abnormal paps. Depending on the results of the colposcopy, they can generally just keep an eye on the cells with dysplasia [the reason you're having an abnormal pap]. In extreme cases, they have to do a LEEP procedure, but my doctor said because its so slow progressing, I shouldn't worry about that until I have a pap after the baby is born.

It's good that they're monitoring you, but please don't stress! I'm in the same boat, and have been for quite some time. The colposcopy could turn out totally normal. Fingers crossed for you!

  • Thank you so much! I'm sorry you have to go through that every three months. I hope all goes well for you after baby is born.

  • I don't want to scare you by any means! So take what I say by a grain of salt. During the procedure they do the similar steps of a Pap smear. Then they insert a tool, you will feel slight pressure and a pinch. The pain isn't so bad it feels like horrible period cramps after the procedure. The gross part is you start bleeding. In my case I bled a lot, so they put this disgusting brown chemical inside that stops the bleeding. It's nasty because once it dries up you have brown chunks that are hard coming out if your vagina. Also hpv is very common and most times your immune system can clear it out. So don't be to worried you will be fine.
  • its painful, the dr tried to do it in office and I all but jumped up on to his cabniet crying. He had to do a d&c later at the hospital with me completely out cause I was not doing it awake. Take a Tylenol before that will help alot. Good luck my mom had the LEEP procedure it was easy outpatient surgery no more bad cells.

Hopefully your colposcopy will come back just fine! Cervical cells are really slow at progressing into dysplasia, so as long as you have regular paps, you should be okay. Keep us posted on how things go! Good Luck! Don't stress out, you'll be just fine!

  • And don't get too worried! Take a Tylenol before you have it done, and take someone with you whose hand you can squeeze! It's really, honestly not that much worse than a pap! I think the worst part was fear of the unknown.. Don't let people freak you out.. If I can do it, you can too! :]

I also had an abnormal pap and colposcopy years ago. Colposcopy was uncomfortable with cramping and a little bleeding afterwards. Definitely take something before you go to get your colposcopy done. Mine was never anything serious and I've had completely normal paps ever since.

  • Thanks everyone. I won't stress about it, and I'll definitely take a Tylenol beforehand. Thanks for the tip, it wouldn't have occurred to me to do that!
