Hi Ladies!
Our DD will be 5 months in just a few days and she is not a fan of her infant carseat. Grandparents bought her a convertible car seat that is for 5-40 pounds rear facing. When is a good time to switch them to the "bigger" car seat? Have any of you already switched carseats? When do you plan on it? I would like to change her carseat in hopes that she would be happier in the car (we never carry her in anywhere in the infant car seat because she refuses to stay in it) so I'm not sure what other benefits are to keeping her in the infant seat. I want to do what is safest but from what I am reading, it seems to be ok to switch to the convertible car seat. Thoughts?
I also posted on the December board.
Thank You!
Re: Carseat / Convertible / what are you doing?
If you never carry the infant seat and it always stays in the car, then you might as well switch to the convertible, assuming it is appropriately sized for LO and it fits in your vehicle properly.
Some people never use an infant carrier.
We switched DS around 9 months. He could sit up well and I was tired of hauling him around. Plus, DH and I were sick of having to leave the infant seat at the daycare since he dropped off and I picked up. With normal kids, I would say switch to a convertible around this age.
DD, on the other hand, moved to the convertible seat a few weeks ago at 5 months. She HATED the infant seat. She screamed every car ride. Seriously, the second she would hear the "click" she would go nuts. It was torture. It put DS, DH, and I in a terrible mood anywhere we went. So we moved her to DS's convertible and bought him a harness booster that will eventually move to a highback then backless booster. She is so much more pleasant in the convertible. But since she's not sitting up yet I keep the infant carrier in the back of the car if we need it (restaurants, grocery, etc.). Sometimes I wear her in the Ergo too.
If you're having the issue I am go ahead and switch but I recommend keeping the carrier for when you need it. It's kind of a pain sometimes but anything is better than listening to her scream.
i agree here. we use the carrier a lot though so im gonna try to use it as long as possible..... or untill my back breaks haha!
I moved DS1 and DS2 both over to the convertible at 2mo old. I hate the infant carrier carseat - ours is way too heavy to carry and the straps/buckles are a pain to use. Therefore, we move to a convertible quickly. The only drawback is that I have to use a wrap/baby carrier and wear him everywhere we go. I don't mind that, but sometimes it's not the most convenient, like grocery shopping when you have to lean over to get things a lot. I remember with DS1 I left the carrier in the car and if I didn't feel like wearing him, I'd plop him back in it and stick him in the shopping cart until he was old enough to sit in the little seat on the shopping cart. The convertible seat definitely seems more comfortable for the kids.
DS2 will be using his infant seat until he outgrows it, 30lbs/30 inches. Then he'll get DS1s current convertible seats, and we'll buy two combination seats for DS1. I know it's what needs to be done, but I seriously cringe at the thought of how much we will end up spending on carseats over the course of my two children!
DS1: Quinn - 10.22.10 and DS2: Cole - 01.18.13
