Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Making Baby Food Process

I would love to make my baby food but let's face it - I'm lazy. I hate that I have to get stuff out to steam then something else to mush and then store - and then I have to clean all of it. Isn't there all in one machines that make making baby food easy?

  • I don't know about all in one machines, but I just bake or boil in large quantities, then use my food processor and freeze in ice cube trays. When I want to feed I just nuke it. I find it a lot easier.

  • I think the baby Beba does it all in one. It is pretty pricy though.  I make mine like the previous poster.

  • It really is not that much work. I just froze pears, avacados, and green beans in about an hours time this morning. I cut up the pears and baked them for 20 minutes. While they were baking I cut up the avacados and put the slices to freeze. I was also steaming the green beans at this time. While the pears cooled I pureed the green beans. I had a paring knife, a round dish, saucepan, and my blender to wash.

I use the Wholesome Baby Food Guide book.

Ditto this. I spent like an hour one day making large quantities of squash, sweet potatoes, green beans, apples, and pears and they've lasted like a month. Buying a special machine seems like a waste because I doubt it's any easier and babies don't eat purees all that long anyway.

  • We have a beaba that we borrowed from a friend, and it does everything. I do like it, but I wouldn't have paid full price for it. Especially not at 8 months. My LO is the same age as yours, and he is losing interest in purees. He wants to feed himself. So I doubt you will need to steam / mush / freeze for much longer. I've occasionally just made a little extra of whatever DH and I are having for dinner and blending it up until it is the right consistency for him. I think we will be doing that a lot more often in the near future - you don't need anything more than a blender.

  • Your ticker says your LO is 8 months?  I assume he/she won't be on pureed food for much longer?

DS is 6 months and been on solids for 2 months.  He now eats what we eat for the most part.  I did make a bunch of pureed foods for the first couple of weeks and froze them, but now I rarely have to "make" his food these days!  I usually plan our dinners with something that's baby-friendly (eg, roasted sweet potato, boiled potato, steamed or roasted cauliflower & carrots etc) and just feed him whatever we are eating that night.  I will save some in the fridge so in case the following night I don't have something suitable for DS, he can eat the leftovers.  DS is also eating seafood and meats - cod, shrimp, scallops, burgers, pork dumplings, shredded chicken.  As long as I cut them up in small pieces, he doesn't have problem eating them.

[I still have a ton of frozen homemade pureed foods in my freezer.]  As long as you have some ways to steam or roast, and you have either a blender or food processor, I wouldn't pay $$$ to buy a special product to make baby food for such a short time.

This. Last night, for instance, I popped 8 sweet potatoes into the oven to bake for an hour. Scoop out the flesh, blend and freeze in ice cube trays. We had some leftover steamed zucchini from what I made at dinner, so I pureed that and froze it. It's not hard at all, especially if you're already cooking veggies for the rest of your family.

  • I think once you do it the first time you realize how easy it is. I actually learned to get the steamfresh bag of veggies. Five minutes in the microwave, 1 minute in the Baby Bullet, and then a few minutes putting the mix into the slots on a ice cube tray and DONE! Easy and fresh. You would be surprised how much baby likes it!!
