Lilienne

WDYT of this name? NN Lily. I'm not a fan of made up names, but then I found out it's actually a real name, so it makes me like it more. And would it go well with Jack?

Re: Lilienne

  • I think she'll have to spell it a lot and get used to being called Lillian, but it's pretty.

It is significantly frillier than Jack, which is all stripped-down nickname. But Jack and Lily go well together.

It's very beautiful, but I agree with PP that you and she will constantly be spelling it for people, and people will constantly be mispronouncing it.

The problem is that when people see the spelling they aren't going to know that its real and you are going to look like you were being you-neek regardless. No one is going to google the spelling to see if it is legit or not. So people are going to side eye you behind your back or they are going to say something and you will be giving the same speech about the spelling over and over.

(Hope that didn't sound rude. Not my intention at all)

I'd stick with either Lily or Lillian.

But is it really not commonly known that Lillienne is a legitimate name?

I don't mean for that to sound snarky, but I'm genuinely curious if a lot of people wouldn't recognize that as a legitimate name.  To me, the spelling isn't even remotely out-there.

I would recognize it as a form of Lillian, and I put it right there with all the other terrible made up spellings of perfectly good names.

All of this is true but I also think that outside of this board, the world in general doesn't have a huge problem with different spellings. If you like it and it's a legit spelling, go for it.

Thanks for the honest responses, everyone. I am not a fan of made up names but I actually made this one up before I found out it was a real name. So it may be seen as youneek even though it truly isn't. (It's kind of a play off my name, which may make it too cheesy to use regardless). I thought it might be viewed the same way Vivienne is. I'm not sure how much of a problem spelling would be if she went by Lily though.

But my point is that it's NOT another made-up spelling.   Both variants are legitimate.

A person may not like a certain spelling, and one [variant] may not be as common (in North America), but it's still legitimate.

I'm just saying that I'm surprised that people would question its legitimacy.  I thought  Lillienne was a somewhat commonly known name, much like Vivienne or to Vivian, but I may be in the minority.

  • I love the name but much prefer the traditional spelling of Lillian. Especially since your son has such a clean and classic name,.

All this. I would just name her Lily.
