LO's new favorite game is dropping things in the toilet, and throwing things into the bath tub while I'm drawing his bath. So far, he thinks electronics are the coolest devices to play this game with. I'm at my wits end trying to keep things out of his ninja fast hands. Things literally get grabbed and chucked in .25 of a second! So far we're up to $800 in damages. Oye.
Anyways my post is actually about waterproof cell phone cases. It seems the two best on the market right now are Lifeproof and Otterbox Armor. The reviews are very mixed. Has anyone tried either of these? Are there any other brands worth looking at? Please share your experiences and recommendations if you've tried these products. Thank you!
Re: Electronics in bath/toilet
We have the locks on the toilet but in the past week one of them has broken and we haven't had the chance to replace it. Also, DH is not the best about remembering to put the seat down in the first place.
LO is always supervised, but sometimes accidents happen. Sometimes things get a little chaotic when we're trying to muti-task. Like last night for instance, everyone was in and out of the bathroom so the door was not shut. My husband was in the bathroom washing his hands and LO swooped in and threw his cell phone in the toilet while I was running his bath. I was quickly changing my shirt so that I could nurse him after bath time, and neither of us were fast enough to get the phone out of his hands.
He is like his father with anything electronic and anything with buttons...completely fascinated by it, and it has been very challenging and exhausting trying to keep these things away from him when he gravitates toward them and is constantly grabbing at them 24/7.
We are first time parents and LO is newly into this phase, so DH and I are still trying to get in the habit of not leaving electronics on the night table or coffee table and remembering to shut the door. Then there are times like the other day when LO got a hold of his sound machine while I was in his room with him folding laundry, and he made a B-line for the bathroom and dropped that into the toilet before I could even catch him. I'm telling you, he is a fast, fast little bugger. Things are in the water before I can even process what's about to happen.
Yes, it can be prevented most times, but we are only human and we're working on it. In the meantime, I'm at the very least covering the phones with waterproof cases just incase, so if you guys could help out with that aspect, I'd appreciate it!
That's quite an exaggeration. This doesn't happen every time we go to the bathroom or give him a bath.
Let's just say if you knew my husband or have ever seen our house, you'd probably understand a little better, LOL.
Yeah, this x 100. DS doesn't have access to our Kindle or phones, or anything he's not supposed to have that costs that much money. That's what counters and drawers are for.
I'm with Lala here TBH.
I get it happening once. Accidents happen everyday.
But $800.00 worth of stuff.
My kid loves electronics too but she knows the IPAD/my phone etc. are only for the LR and nowhere else.
Also, I keep all of electronics (laptop, phones, IPad, kindle) either high up in my office or on top of the fridge. They only come down that way when I want her to have them.
Also, my kid only flushed one thing ever she shouldn't have. It was also her first lesson in discipline. Toddlers are too young for discipline but they are fully of capable of understanding the big stuff. Time for a gentle but sterm finger grab, getting on eye level, saying no, removing and a timeout maybe.
I have an otterbox waterproof cover. It's fine.
$800.00 makes it sound like it's happening every day, but it's only been a few occasions. Trust me, we are learning our lessons! My phone was $200.00 for a refurb sent in the mail through insurance and DH's was $400.00 because he had to buy the phone outright. Neither of us were allowed to do upgrades yet. So that's the main part of the expense right there with just our phones.
We've started implementing some of these techniques, and trying a time-out type situation, which seems to be getting the point across, so hopefully things will improve now!

Usually I'm pretty understanding of these things, because I have the type of kid that gets into everything, destroys everything he touches, and is lightening fast and very clever. In about 3 minutes, he disabled the doorknob cover on our bedroom door, climbed over the baby gate, went into the master bath, climbed on to the toilet, opened the medicine cabinet, grabbed a bottle of Excedrin, and had it opened and was playing with the pills. Literally in the time it took me to make a PBJ and slice an apple. I get it, this is what toddlers do.
But he has never ruined anything expensive. He doesn't have access to our electronics. We keep cell phones and tablets on the counter or in our bedroom when they are not being used. I also close the bathroom door when I am running the bath, though mostly for my convenience because he always tries to climb in fully clothed. And I learn from my mistakes, too. If he's done it once, I will find a way to prevent it from happening again.
I'm a FTM, too, and of a high needs child that is constantly keeping us on our toes. I just can't imagine a scenario in which 2 grown adults cannot manage to keep a cell phone from a baby, I'm sorry.
ditto this, I have two very busy "high needs" twin toddlers and as a FTM we can manage to have one adult keep them from the things we dont want ruined. you just put it out of reach consistently.
Oh dear! LOL
I know, I know. It's totally our faults and we're doing our best to make the adjustment. We have not had any incidents in the past few days so I think we're getting there. Being only a few days into this behavior, we just weren't prepared and learned the hard way. The problem came from the fact that LO was previously allowed to play with our electronics before his "throwing in the water" phase started, so we never put anything out of his reach that wasn't necessarily considered dangerous, like our phones for example. So now we are having to break a habit of leaving our phones on the coffee table and such. You live and learn. But I STILL am going to waterproof my phone no matter what. Haha.
I also close the bathroom door when I am running the bath, though mostly for my convenience because he always tries to climb in fully clothed.
Sounds familiar! Hahah
Well...to answer your question. My husband has the Lifeproof case and he likes it. He had one with his IPhone4 and had and the typing was a little akward sometimes. We just upgraded to the 5 and he says the typing is actually much better now.
We are FTP as well...and shut the bathroom door. I think it's common sense. We don't take phones in the bathroom because that's disgusting, and phones are up and out of reach along with other electronics. We both shut the lid on the toilet too...so I guess that has helped, especially since LO doesn't even care about the toilet right now.
If your phone without the cover gets dropped in water you should put it in a bowl of rice and allow the rice to absorb the water...I think for 24-48 hours, until the inside is dry. DO NOT try to turn it on until it is dry. I know a few peopel that have done this and it's worked. Best of luck...
