Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How do you know it's time for food?

My LO is 15 weeks old. He has started recently where he cries when his bottle is gone. It reminds me a lot of his cries when he would get done BF and wasn't getting enough so he cried. He's already taking 6 oz bottles. During the day, I can only get him to go about 2 hours between feedings. Today, so far, he hasn't even made it 2 hours.

Should I call the pediatrician and see if he thinks it's time for something more?

Re: How do you know it's time for food?

  • It's too early for solids.  Some of the developmental signs they're ready for solids are sitting up unassisted, able to bring food to their mouth, etc.  It's also advisable to wait until at least 6mo.

If your LO is still hungry after a bottle offer them more BM/formula.  I wouldn't focus on the intake amount so much as what your LO is telling you.  If he's eating a bottle and is still hungry afterwards he needs more.  It's also normal to only go 2 hours between feedings.

  • Have you tried upping your bottles to 8oz?  Babies will also tend to eat more and more frequently during big growth spurts.

Having said that, I've started solids with all four of my kids somewhere between 4-5 months.  You can try giving a little food and see how your baby responds.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

We started the day before her 6 month birthday.  We were with my mom, and she had cut up an avocado, and I took a little and made her some puree and offered it to her.

I haven't tried it yet, but I guess I will. He just spits up soooo much due to his reflux I almost hate to try more.

  • I would try offering more in his bottle feedings. My LO started taking 8 oz bottles at 21ish weeks. I knew to start solids when he reached for our food and was very interested in our eating! However, it isn't meant to satisfy a hungry baby. Benjamin will go a bit longer between his afternoon and evening bottle because of his "solids snack" but it doesn't affect how much he takes from his bottles.

  • It's too early, just give more BM/formula.
  • DD is 16.5 weeks, and we started giving her something more than formula. She was taking close to 35 to 40 oz a day. Maybe try cereal, if you plan on introducing cereal to LOs diet. Use BM or formula and make the cereal really thin and see if LO will take it. You can call the pedi and see what they think if you're worried about it.
