Q for Ergo moms....

How soon can you start going without the infant insert in the ergo? DD is 3 1/2 months and I'm asking for an Ergo for Christmas so I'm wondering if I should get the insert. The website says up to 4-6 months, but I'm not sure what the function of the insert is and why it's needed--is it the baby's weight that makes it necessary, like to make the carrier more snug ir is it a head control thing?

Re: Q for Ergo moms....

  • It is a head control and a size matters thing.

Z did fine without a insert, and I carried her the sidewats way until she was 9 months without issue.

G wasn't comfortable in it side ways, but now that he is the size of a 1 year old (and has been for a month or two), he is comfortable in it front carry possition.

You really don't know until you try it.

  • If you don't get one, and then decide you need it, I often see them for sale on Craigslist for pretty cheap.
  • Caroline is Miss Head Control these days, so maybe we could get by without it. I'm talking DH into doing giving it as an "early gift" so I can use it when we fly for the holidays next week (traveling by myself with the baby, ahhh!). It looks like the Ergo will be a lot better for travel than the Bjorn as far as BFing and the sleeping hood and what not.
  • FYI BFig in it doesn't really work...at least I have never been anywhere near successful with getting either child close to the right area while wearing it. I just take my arms out (keeping it around my waist) and have at it, in the usual stye.

  • Ah, thanks for the input on the BFing. I thought that might be too good to be true.
