DS hates our help with brushing his teeth. However, when he brushes his teeth himself, he just chews on the toothbrush and gets distracted by other things. Anyone have suggestions for getting him to brush his own teeth?
DD does this at times. I always say "mommy first, so we make sure and get those germies out!... OPEN WIDE". Then, I will sing a silly song I made up, or ABC's, etc. while I am brushing. I always let her do it herself afterwards and sing the same song while she does it as well. We included "brush teeth morning and night" on her chore chart so if she is really having a fit about it I will say "Well that is oh so sad, I really wanted you to get a sticker for good teeth brushing. Don't you want that sticker?". Works like a charm!
Our dentist and pedi both recommend the parent brush them up until age 8. They don't have the fine motor skills at toddler age to be able to properly brush. I would find a system where he brushes and then you finish it, or vice versa. Mine holds a separate tooth brush and plays with it while I brush his teeth. If he refuses to let me/open his mouth, then he gets held down on the floor or changing table so DH or I can do it. Cavity prevention is non-optional here.
We try to make it a game. So I ask DD what color she wants her teeth to be. She chooses a color (usually brown, weird) and I pretend to be painting her teeth. I use this high squeaky voice to talk for the teeth and how excited they are to be brown and how much they like the color, looks like chocolate cupcakes, it goes on and on. Then she runs out and shows DH her 'colored' teeth. Maybe something like that?
I've also heard some people have luck with letting their child brush the parent's teeth, while the parent brushes the child's teeth. Sounds like it could work!
DD was that way for awhile. We started out with her letting me brush them, but around the summer before she turned 2, she refused to let me do it and would only chew on the brush. It became quite a battle!! I would brush my teeth at the same time and would always tell her to "Brush like Mommy". Now she brushes her own teeth (with the training toothpaste) and she sometimes brushes but usually does just chew or suck on the tooth brush. Once she's done, she says, "Brush my princess teeth?" I bought princess toothpaste, so I started asking her if I can brush her princess teeth.
Now, she loves having me brush her teeth. I let her do it on her own first and most of the time she decides when to let me brush her teeth.
Just wish I could get her to learn to spit before swallowing it all!
