advice needed - career related

I'm hoping some of you will have some ideas to help me think of other options. I've been working full-time as a drug and alcohol counselor (inpatient rehab) and part-time in my private practice (I'm a licensed mental health counselor).

My full time job doesn't pay all that great, but it's steady work. At my private practice, I make good money per hour but do not have the time nor money put aside in order to build the practice.

We are struggling to catch up since my bout of unemployment last year. My husband's job is cutting back hours (he's a supervisor in a book warehouse and, well, people aren't buying physical books like they did years ago). He's looking for a new job.

I've been keeping my eyes open for better paying work but I'm running out of ideas on where to look. I feel like I need to look out of my field and move towards something corporate (plus I'm exhausted from being a caretaker 24/7 when the only one I want to care for is Fifi). Any ideas on where to look for more job openings?

Thanks in advance! I know my May Mamas are chock full of good ideas.

  • I don't have a good place to look but I know how you are feeling!  I used to work in D&A and am currently a mobile therapist.  The fee for service jobs are hard.  I feel like I work a lot and am mentally drained for very little money.  My H and I talked about this last year and I decided to change careers.  I am going to nursing school in the Fall.  I am quitting my job and going full time.  It will be a tight couple years money wise but the end result will pay off.  I enjoy the social work field and think it's a good fit for my personality but realistically, I need something with better income and great job stability.  Hope that helps!

  • What about working in a school system?  I'm not sure if you need to be a certified teacher, but you might be able to work as a guidance counselor.  Or you could look for a job teaching at a community college.  I have no idea how the pay compares to what you make now, but the benefits are usually good and you might be able to take advantage of the time off to build your private practice.
  • Thanks to you both. Getting into public schools around here is really difficult. The job market on Long Island is saturated with applicants and those jobs are slim pickins. I will start looking at the local community colleges again. It's been a while since I checked those job postings out.
