I happen to like my Diaper Genie and saw this idea on Pintrest. I just so happened to get the Up & Up brand of kitchen bags to try it out the next time I change out the bag. I change mine 2x a week so it doesn't get a chance to get smelly. In addition, I put one of those new removable Febreeze stick up things under the lid in preparation for DS to go on solids in the next few months. I certainly can afford the Genie refills but this idea is so much more convenient, if it works.
OP, thank you for passing on the helpful idea. I don't get why people get defensive over someone's choice for a feces receptacle. We all make choices that suit our individual needs. There's no one supremely ideal diaper receptacle. That is unless it has offended or physically harmed someone in some way and others need to be warned...

I was just saying that if you really want to save money, not spending $35 on a pail and $8 or whatever on refills is a good way to start.
Mabenner, my apologies for misreading the tone of your post. Ladies as one newbie to another (OP) I was just trying to be supportive instead of automatically slapping down a post- not that Mabenner did that, however it's done time and time again on every board. No need for me to calm down, I'm not worked up.
Thanks for the tip, OP! We love our diaper genies (we got them on a BOGO sale so we have 2- one for upstairs, one for down)...I know some don't, but I do...we'll def have to try the garbage bag trick as soon as we run out of refills (we got several from our shower).
Thanks for the tip! I love my diaper genie as our trash cans are in our detached garage. It?s about 40 feet or so and there is no way I am walking that far w/ LO each time I need to throw away a smelly diaper. I am all about convenience and hate taking out the trash as it is. The refills last us a while, but I make sure to use as much of the plastic as I can each time I change it out. We also just got 3 refills for $11 as they were on sale at our grocery store.
Ditto. I have a standard bedroom wastebasket I got for ~$4 at Target. I use the scented Ruffies trashbags (also ~$4 for 100) to help with the smell. We empty every other day or so (we have twins) and the nursery rarely smells poopy.
We started with the A&H version of the Genie and it was way more a of a PITA than it was worth. But to each their own...
to get huge amount of saving I would suggest to go with cloth diapers and baby wipes. Also you should start stockpiling before baby arrived to reduce last minute rash on baby born.

So true. Not something I have died without with either of my kids.

Hi,
to get huge amount of saving I would suggest to go with cloth diapers and baby wipes. Also you should start stockpiling before baby arrived to reduce last minute rash on baby born.
