Night Owl: Normal?

LO generally gets done with his last nap about 7 or 8 and will not sleep until he is ready for bed at 9:30 or 10 p.m. Sometimes he doesn't fall asleep until 10:15. I would much rather put him to sleep at 7 or 8, but I don't get signals that this would work.

He wakes up to nurse at 4, 6, and 7 a.m. I take him to bed with me at 7 to nurse/sleep and we get up at 8 a.m.

Is this normal?  Will I ever be able to put him to bed early?

Re: Night Owl: Normal?

  • Is it possible to keep him up after 5 until you want him to go to bed?

I had always thought that babies need to nap every two hours, so I hadn't considered that. Your thought is that I would keep him up after 5 and he might start getting groggy around 8 or 9?

His last nap is very late which is why he doesn't want to sleep until 9:30 or 10. My DD did the same thing and now she goes to sleep at almost 8 pm on the dot.

    Thank you for your advice.

To everyone: what time do your LOs usually wake up from their last naps of the night?

  • My LO has no regular napping schedule, but I do try to keep him awake between 5pm and bedtime (typically 7:30-8pm.) His typically catnaps so if he only had a nap from 4:30-5:00pm, he is definitely ready for bed by bedtime. He typically wakes up 1-2 times a night, and he is up for the day around 6am.
