Babies: 3 - 6 Months

do you let LO have mushy table food?

the pediatrician told me that it's best to give her only pureed veggies and some fruits. i'm curious if anybody actually listens to their pediatrician? lol. also, do y'all let your LO have mushy table foods? for example, if you're at a restaurant and you have mashed potatoes on your plate, do you let her have some? my baby is 7 months, so just wondering.

thanks!

  • Go with your gut.

I make all of DS food. The only one I make right before hand is his avocado/banana mix. I leave it chunky for the most part, so he has to "chew" it to swallow it and those foods are easy to mush without teeth.

DH and I took DH gma out for dinner one night and I let him try some of the sweet potatoes that were on my plate. I do let him try things that are soft that I have on my plate. Gauc (which he LOVES), potatoes, gravy, little pieces of veggies I can mush with my fork (asparagus, carrots, strawberries, blueberries).

We just started pureed fruits and veggies about a month ago. However, we were at dinner last night and I let her try a bite of mashed potatoes. Some people never do baby food, they just go right to table food so I don't really think it's a big deal. DS had his first table food at Thanksgiving so he was like 7 1/2 months. We gave him some mashed potatoes and tiny pieces of green beans and turkey. I remember him rolling them around in his mouth and swallowing some.

  • My second daughter wouldn't eat purees at all. She completely refused them, so at 7 months, after a month of seeming ready for food and refusing the purees I offered (I only do homemade food) I gave her a tiny piece of adult food. She ate it happily. It turned out she didn't like mashed/pureed foods and at nearly 4 she still doesn't. Not all babies like purees and as long as the food is soft and small there's no harm in giving them real food.

  • I make my own veggies, but he is always so interested in what we have so I often rip pieces of noodle or something if I know it will be okay for him to try and let him have it. He has two teeth and got the hang of eating fairly quickly, so I figure what heck!

We're not starting solids till 6mo, but we'll be doing BLW so yes, I would offer safe pieces of table food .
