DD got kicked out of daycare

So this is my first official post here.  My DD is 18 months and she has spina bifida, so she's in a wheelchair.  Currently she is in the infant room at her daycare.  They usually transition at 16 months but they were concerned about her mobility so they've been holding her back.  We finally had an evaluation with the director last week where they watched her interact with the other kids in the toddler room. We were in there for an hour and it was her first time ever really being in there so she was adjusting to the different pace.  DH and I met with the director this morning for the evaluation and basically told us that 1) she cannot stay in the infant room past 18 months and 2) they cannot make accommodations for her to move to the toddler room.  We asked if they are kicking her out, and he said that we can draw our own conclusions to what that means.

I'm just really heartbroken.  Overall I've loved this center and DD loves the teachers.  They have given us 3 months to find a new place, so we're trying to get into another center that is specially geared towards children with disabilities (and they have other normal kids too), as well as working our friend and church networks for a nanny.  I just want her out of there as soon as possible.

I'm sorry my first post here is kind of a downer, but I know you ladies here will know what this feels like.  We do plan to file a grievance with the ADA, but ultimately I don't want to keep her somewhere that doesn't truly want her.  We don't want another family to go through this, and I cannot bear the thought of having to deal with this director long term.  Even though she's little, I want her to see how we handle situations like this.   Please let me know we're doing the right thing.  Is there something else we can do?

  • I am so sorry you had to hear that news.

My DD1 had a tethered spinal cord that was misdiagnosed and she had a neurogenic bladder (our last uro-dynamic showed mostly normal results) but prior to that, even without the cathing we could not get anywhere to take her even for just private pre-school a few hours twice a week.

I called 30+ local schools, 1 that was church based said yes but it was 1+ hours away and the other was an actual daycare but I wasn't comfortable sending her there since they had failed quite a few board inspections for things I considered to be serous.

Does she have to cath?  If not it would probably be 'easier' to find another daycare to take her, but honestly it really sucks, I know & I'm sorry.

Some places have an actual special needs daycare center (I think it's called Rainbow kids here) but it's 1.5 hours away from me so nothing local.  You should look into that, also has your EI or private PT team and call the local disability resource center as well.

You may find you have a waiver in your state that would allow you to hire an attendant to watch her in your home, this is what we do for P.  What state are you in?  I can do some digging if you haven't already.

    Oh, and welcome =)

  • So sorry. My DS has been in a wheelchair since he was an infant. I know how some people look at the chair as an inconvenience to have to deal with. She will be better off away from that director anyways, but it still huts. I also want to commend you for the way you are dealing with them, she will see how great you are standing upi for her as she gets older.

  • I had a sort of similar situation when I moved to where we are now and was looking for daycare for my children (I have one SN child). After the tour I asked some questions and given their answers it was easy to tell that they had no desire for DS2 to be there. While I basically read between the lines of what they were saying, I certainly had no desire for either of my children to go there and I do tell people my opinion of that place if asked about daycare places in town.

I'm truly sorry that you are having to deal with finding a new place for childcare. Some people, or places, just suck.

  • Hi and Welcome to the board. We're also in MN. Where abouts are you? Sorry that your daycare did this. Have you heard of St. David's Center in Minnetonka? They are an inclusion preschool starting with kids as young as 16 or 18 months. Inclusion meaning they have kids with SN and also typically developing peers in the same classrooms. They are wonderful. DS is in their autism day treatment program.

I don't know much about spina bifida or limitations with that, but if she receives other services for anything, they also have those available as well.

Feel free to PM with any other questions.

  • I do not have any experience with this situation, but I did want to say I am so sorry you and your family have had to deal with this. It breaks my heart that they weren't not accommodating.

I hope you can find a wonderful, caring alternative.

YES!!  We are trying to get into St. David's.  We are in Plymouth/Wayzata.  We submitted our app and toured and are hoping they'll still have room in the summer program.  If not until the fall, then that's when we'll pull her out of her current place and try to find a nanny over the summer.  She currently receives EI services and goes to PT through Children's.  I'm glad to hear other good feedback about them.

Thanks to everyone for your support!  We brought some ADA materials to our meeting today with us but the links provided were helpful.  Though I'm sorry any of us have to be well versed in ADA enough.

Oh, good! I hope you're able to start in the Summer. St. David's is a WONDERFUL place!

  • Check with your local United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) Preschool. Our local one is WONDERFUL! Their program is for both disabled and "typical" children. They take many different types of disabilities, not just CP. If you are in a larger city, there may be several options like this in your community. Good luck and HUGS!

  • I don't have any advice to give, but I wanted to say I'm boiling mad for you! Also, I wanted to say that you have such a great attitude about it. I've seen moms who have fought to keep their kids in centers just out of principle and although they were right- it wasn't what was best for their kiddo. I hope I can always keep that in mind as I make decisions too!
