We are moving from Ontario to Iowa at the end of June. We found a nice looking house to rent which we've already signed a lease on. I'm going to see it by myself this weekend hello two nights all to myself to sleep!!. So I'm wondering how you mamas would use your time? I've never been to this town before. I plan to meet the landlord at the house Friday morning, take some measurements and scout out the house and yard, and then go visit a potential daycare. Then I'll have all day Saturday to explore. Anything special I should check out at the house or suggestions?
Like I've said we are already committed to the house so it's more just to get a feel for it and determine if we should sell some of our furniture prior to the move! I've got my tape measure and camera and passport! ready to go....anything I'm missing?
Re: New house/town advice?
2 nights to yourself? Colour me jealous!
I guess I would scout the area for playgrounds, library, grocery stores, that sort of thing?
Take more measurements and pictures than you think you'll need! I didn't, and I tried to make a floor plan to figure out where to tell the movers to put stuff...and then it turned out that my measurements were off and I couldn't put stuff where I wanted to.
Also, try to look for any little quirks the house has and ask about them. Example: our porch light is on an ancient timer. It was set perfectly until DS touched it. Now I can't set it, and the homeowner doesn't know how to set it...so no nice automatic porchlight anymore. Just little things like that that are easier to ask when the homeowner is there.
I also agree about checking out parks and grocery stores and things like that. Maybe get a summer activity schedule from the community center or library?
