Time out

I know we've discussed time outs before, but I was wondering where do you put your LO for time out? She has her big chair, but don't want her associating that with her negative behavior. I thought about just sitting her in the floor against the wall, maybe in a corner. Anyone do anything different?

Re: Time out

  • Our stairs have a landing which makes it hard for them to see most of the first floor but I can see them from the kitchen. I have a little bench there, my parents gave it to E from Santa as a joke one year. Lo hasn't really had a time out but that's what I used for E. When he was a little older I told him it was a spot for him to calm down and think about being a listener which is IMO the point of the time out. He would go there on his own when he was mad or frustrated so it wasn't a negative spot for him. I think as long as the time outs are being done appropriately you'll be fine.

  • Thanks. We should have started a while ago, but we have to do something because redirecting on a few things is not working.

  • I will not start time outs probably until next year.  We used a corner in our hall with our other kids.

  • We don't do time outs yet but I will probably implement Super Nanny's "naughty step" on our stairs. Or sit him in the bench in our entryway hallway. Nothing fun to look at there.
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

  • We do timeouts on the second to bottom stair. I have had to do one at church before and I just sat her in an isolated area and told her she was in timeout. She understood and sat.  I started them as "sit downs" (calm down) time and they slowly evolved into time outs.

N gets a TO if she throws a fit for not getting her way and doesn't calm down after a warning, if she hits, or if she does something she knows she's not supposed to do. We don't have to do them often and she always sits the entire time. I've never done more than a minute and a half.

  • Our front door opens into the living room. We have her sit on the mat that is by the front door.  It works for her because she can't see the tv or her toys from there...makes it incredibly boring for her.
