I recently read Ferber's book and I started sleep training tonight, but now I can't find the book and I had a couple of questions.
1. Do I go in and reassure her after it's been a straight 3 minutes of crying? She will cry hard for a minute, then she'll stop. She then starts back over again.
2. If I know she has a dirty diaper, it's fine for me to change her, right? Then, put her right back in her crib.
She went down for the night so easy, but waking up in the night is another story. This part is rough. I'm hoping this will definitely get better, because she's missing out on a good bit of sleep.
Re: Ferber Q
1) I don't think Ferber addresses problem #1. DS was crying nonstop for the first couple of nights, and became intermittent crying after that. By then, the checks were so far apart (15 minutes?) that he would be asleep before it was time for us to go in.
2) Yes, you definitely should change a dirty diaper!
3) Does she wake up crying? Is she hungry? What do you do when she wakes up MOTN? Do you feed her or just soothe her or let her cry? Does she not want to go back to sleep after feeding? There is a whole chapter on MOTN wakings in the book. Hopefully you can find your book and address your DD's specific issue.

Our IVF miracle, Baby Boy M, arrived on 11/8/2012!
We read/did Ferber method last month. Here's my take on it:
1. If it sounds like LO is not settling down to sleep -- whether he's crying or fussing around -- I go in and reassure him according to the time table on the book. We now recognize his "settling" sounds. He hums to himself. So once he's doing that, he's asleep within a minute or two. If that is the case, I don't go it as to not stimulate him.
2. Yes, if baby has a dirty diaper, is hungry, is too hot/cold, rolled into a position and needs to be moved -- anything the baby needs, take care of it. If they are in need, they're not going to sleep until they feel better.
My little guy is SLEEPING so much better since doing Ferber, naps, night, all around. Good luck!
