Re: How about a "bad gifts" thread?

  • My mom asked me at least half a dozen times what I wanted for my birthday. I told her that with the new baby and our upcoming move, what I could really use was some gift cards to Canadian Tire. It's a boring gift, but like I said, I could really use it because we'll be needing to buy a lot of basics (like rakes, trash cans, etc.)

Anyhoo, my parents aren't big into giving GC's, but still. I had a hard time hiding my surprise (and by that, I mean WTF) when they gave me this:

What is this? You ask. Why, it's a collapsible fruit basket, of course! Taddaaaaaa!

She told me she had the receipt if I wanted to return it (even before I'd unwrapped it) but I would just feel bad. Still though. That is sooooo not something I would have bought for myself.

  • My mom just isn't very good at picking gifts. For Christmas, she got my brother a pretty ugly sweater. It had big bold horizontal stripes that made him look like a gay pride flag. It was hilarious. I think the best part was my brother trying to keep a straight face while trying it on.

What? That's so weird. I don't understand. How does it stand? Why is it collapsible? Is it wooden? Can it hold a lot of fruit?

    I have so many questions.

"I don't understand" was my initial reaction, too.

It's hard to describe, but basically, you tilt parts of it to make the basket "unfold" and then twist the bottom part at a 90 degree angle to turn it into a stand.

Maybe I need to make a video or something. lol

It can probably hold like a bunch of bananas and a few apples, so the size is decent.

Oh and yes, it is wood.

Yeah....I was glad the lady who gave the gift wasn't there. I know some people like figurines, but...not my style.

  • This thread makes me laugh!!

Only thing I can think of was a set of pajamas my MIL got me. She got sets for both of my SILs too and they were actually wearable, even cute. But for me... I got a super old lady night gown of floral pink and lace. My DH was like WTF before I could even fake like it! LOL, it was awful. I had no idea that because I am a mom now I have to wear fugly nightgowns.

  • I am laughing, this thread is so funny!

I think my funniest gift was from my MIL at my baby shower.  My ILs had split our crib and bedding set with my parents, but my MIL wanted me to open something from her during the party.

Well, she gave me all this old "stuff" of DH's.....and while there were one or two nice sentimental things (i.e. his baby spoon), it was mostly a basket of junk that I guess she didn't want in her house anymore.  And it was all individually wrapped in a basket, so I had to open and hold up every item for everyone to see.

The best was that while I was trying to be gracious about it, DH's two cousins were laughing really loud and saying, "Aunt J, how the helll could you give her this crap, that's so mean, she doesn't want this stuff in her house, she's just being nice and polite to you!"  And they were right.

  • Mama Ha, that basket is ridiculous. Maybe wait a few days, then tell her you don't have the counter space for it?

And, ladybug, that baby is frightening.

I got stuff for our house from my mom and MIL got me placemats that are cute.

The absolute worst gifts I ever got we're for our wedding. I guess because we had a Jewish ceremony people thought we wanted random weird crap from Israel. We got a lazy Susan with fruit on it, we ended up making it into a drinking game. It was so fugly. I don't know where it is now. But, think purple and pink fruit.

    smoke detector,

    ...

a giant plastic ring painted to look like a rock and tarps.

Well at least the smoke detector is useful?

And I can't even try to picture what that ring is supposed to look like.

  • My MIL doesn't believe in giving gift cards, isn't well off enough to send us nice things, but still insists on sending gifts. Last year for Christmas she spent over $20 in shipping to mail us a box of... stuff.

A *free* jello mold that came with something she bought

    A mini nail file

A used stained onesie from a garage sale/thrift store

Cookies that spoilt before it arrived :(

    and some shampoo/lotion samples.

For the cost of shipping the box alone she could've mailed a decent sized gift card (I know she thinks they're unthoughtful) or ordered something online and found a code for free shipping and had it shipped to our house.

I try to not be ungrateful, but I wish she'd not sent anything at all :/

  • For Christmas my FIL bought me a robe gift set with some smelly soap and slippers. The robe is a total hooker robe and barely grazes my thighs.
