BTDT: Where did you go into labor?

As the time approaches I'm getting nervous about logistics!  And it doesn't help that one of my coworkers wants me to leave early so he doesn't have to see me go into labor ... men.  Sheesh.

So ... where were you when you started labor?

  • With my first I was at work. My water didn't break, but started having contractions 10 minutes apart. I stayed and worked a half day because end of month was a HUGE deal there, and I figured staying on my feet could only help. One of the guys I worked with kept saying that if my water broke near him, he would punch a pregnant woman. Ha. I actually loved him and hovered near him just to make him nervous. Good times.
  • First one at home and water broke with the second one at work.

  • I woke up at home with contractions with my first. I am now expecting my second on the 10th of June and plan on working right up to the day!!!
  • My water broke as I was leaving work at 6pm. It was a slow break, thank goodness!

  • Sleeping.  The day after Christmas, my water broke at 4am.  My eyes flew open when it happened because I knew....and I panicked.  haha.  I was afraid it would be like the movies and I would just have a huge gush.  That wasn't the case, it was just a trickle.  We got our bag and ran off to the hospital.  Very good and easy labor all together.  DS was born at 6pm that night.

  • At home with DH and the inlaws. I was just working from home, had no idea I was almost 4 cm!
  • I started noticing signs of pre-term labor while at home, I stayed pregnant an extra week and the doctor ended up breaking my water while I was in the hospital.

I think there are a ton of people that need/choose to have their water broken and/or it doesn't break until they are at the hospital.

Unless your water breaks and gushes down your leg, it's pretty rare to just suddenly "go in to labor" like on TV lol.  It does happen, but usually you'll have some indicators leading up, especially with your first kid.  Giant poops.  Losing your mucus plug.  Period-like cramps.  And just slow, steady building of real contractions over time.  I can't remember the percentage, but the number of women whose labor beging with the water breaking is actually surprisingly low too.

That said I was probably in the very beginning stages of labor the day I was scheduled for an evening induction.  DH took the day off work and we actually went out to lunch and dinner even though I was having contractions etc.  I just wanted to get out of the house.  We went to L&D around 9:30 if I remember, but had I not had the scheduled induction at that point (over a week late), I am guessing I would have stayed home a few more hours in the evening and gone in over night or the next day.

It was a long, slow process.

I agree, its not like the movies although I wish it were. Thats what makes it hard to tell if its real or not sometimes. I live an hour away from the hospital so I don't like to let my contractions get too close but at the same time,I don't like getting sent home for false labor. My water broke with the last one so that was a given but I got sent home twice with my first because what I thought was labor really wasnt. I'm on my third and am sometimes tempted to go to the hospital in the middle of the night because I swear my contractions are horrible but the kids still in there so...

Home. Midnightish. I am one of the weird ones for whom labor came out of nowhere. I never even had a single BH before labor started with real, timeable contractions. My water never broke.

  • We were at home. We even went out to Chilis for lunch.

  • At home.

Fwiw, you don't go into labor that quickly. It's not like the TV shows where the woman suddenly doubles over in pain. It typically happens VERY gradually. In my case, I didn't realize I was in labor for almost 10 hours. It felt crampy and uncomfortable for awhile. Only when I realized I could time them did I know I was in labor.

I had lunch with my husband, dropped some stuff off at work and went shopping while in labor. Nobody knew.

  • I was induced with DS1. However; the day of induction I was starting labor on my own I think. Just light period cramps and came and went.

DS2 I was at my Dr. appt. I went pee and lost my plug. I showed the nurse, and she showed my Dr. I started having contractions right after I lost my plug, but was sent home since it was too early. I slept that night, and woke up at 8am the next day and tried to ease the pain with a hot bath. The pain just got worse...so we drove into the hospital and sure enough I was in labor.

My water never broke on it's own- both times. With DS2 my water bag was actually coming out and my midwife just rubbed it, and it popped on it's own. I pushed 3 or 4 times and he was in my arms.

At home in bed right before midnight. I would LOVE to have that happen again. I slept through most of my early labor so by the time we hit the hospital in the morning I was feeling pretty rested and I was already at 4cm.

  • At home, it was about 4am. I went to go to the bathroom while DH was waking up for an early shift at work... I had a little gush of clear/light yellow fluid as I was pulling my pants down to sit on the toilet then an hour later (after DH had left) the contractions started.

  • My water broke at work. Luckily I was going to the bathroom when it happened and I was leaving for the day. It also helped that my work was 1 mile from the doctor's office/hospital since I drove there to get checked and DH met me there.

See, you're so smart. FTMs, DO THIS.

I went into labor just before midnight, too, and stayed up all damn night timing because I was excited. No wonder I was effing exhausted at 2pm when I was only halfway dilated; at which point I got an epi and pitocin and everything went to shitt.

I told H that I'm taking a Benadryl when labor hits this time and going to sleep, lol.

Right!? and DS had his first bowl movement in utero, so it was meconium laced fluid all over their white carpet (I went all movie like with the big gush and immediate contractions). Andplusalso, super fun road trip to the hospital. I'm a dumbass.

Not to freak anyone out or anything.........;)

  • With ds1 I was at home playing wii bowling and DH was 2 hrs away hunting. Lol. ::in his defense I told him to go bc I thought if he stayed home nothing would happen! It's a 5 day thing once a yr. no big deal. ::

With ds2 I was rocking ds1 to sleep and went to stand up from the recliner, felt a pop and when I stood up water came gushing out.

  • In bed. I was really tired and just climbed in, within a minute I had my first "real" contraction. I labored all night before I got to the 5-1-1 criteria.

  • My first contraction woke me up around 4 am...I was too excited to go back to sleep. I labored at home until 4pm when we headed to the hospital. When we got there I was 4 cm and at 9:02 that night I had DS!

In retrospect I first noticed early signs of labor at the grocery store in the early afternoon.  I just felt crampy and sick but it didn't even cross my mind that I was in labor.  Came home and took a nap where I woke up to contractions.  They got more intense and timetable throughout the evening and we headed to hospital a little after 1 am.  My water didnt break till the doctor popped it at 10 centimeters dialated.

Ftm mom here and I told dh to not take me to the hospital until it is absolutely necessary. I'd rather labor at home then at the hospital for as long as possible
