Trouble TTC

Jumping into the deep end without my arm floaties

Update... went in for my cd2 ultrasound today.  Doc was late as usual, so the nurse talked with me about how last cycle was my 3rd injectable, with 4 clomid cycles before that.  She said that when everything has been perfect every time, and we still fail this many times, Doc usually wants to set up an IVF consult.  So I did, preemptively, just in case I had cysts again.

Ultrasound showed no cysts, but my RE changed his plan of attack from trying one more follistim IUI to saying that he feels strongly that it most likely will not take either.  He is questioning if there is some sort of problem with the fertilization process.  He doesn't want me to waste the money that I would have spent on another IUI cycle when I could just put that towards an OOP IVF cycle.  He said sometimes, life and medicine just don't make sense, and he wants to do what is best for me and my sanity.  I agreed, and told him I would keep my IVF consult (2 weeks from today).  He started me on birth control today to rest my ovaries.  Now, I just need to have a conversation with my hubby tonight to make sure we are both ready to do this.  Obviously we both want a baby badly, and we aren't getting any younger.  It's just a huge step that hubby, RE, and myself never thought we would have to take... naive much?  Yes.  But truthful.

I know a lot of you aren't to this step yet, but I'd be interested to hear what you would do if you were us.

  • I don't have any experience and to be honest, I don't really know what I would do. But I did want to say I am sorry you are going through this.  I am keeping you in my T&P and sending ((HUGS)) your way.

I would fgo for it personally! I almost would rather skip the IUIs and go straight to IVF. Go big or go home is how I see it. I just can't stand failure after failure, so DH and I discussed what our plan was before we started this journey. We decided no more than 3 IUIs and one IVF before moving on to adoption or fostering. If we get to the IVF and it fails, we may even just throw in the towel all together. I really need adoption and fostering to be in my heart and right now, it's not. It was tough to decide this and we may be outing ourselves by not doing more, but we also have to think about our financial future because all of this is oop. Good luck to whatever you all decide on doing!

  • Niffie, I am so sorry you are going through this! DH and I have discussed how far we are willing to go with treatment and I am more willing to go farther than he is. We gave ourselves a time line of when we will stop fertility treatments and move onto adoption (Whenever I get out of Graduate school, so about 3 years). I am more willing to give IVF a shot than he is. We are both not willing to do donor sperm or egg. I think my DH would want to keep trying the cheaper option, where as I would understand not wanting to waste money and just go for IVF.

I am so sorry you are in this position to make a decision like this that you never thought you would have to make.  ((HUGS!!))

  • We have an IVF consult in June. I'm nervous too and part of me wants to try a couple more IUI's now that my hydro is clipped, but at the same time, we want that sticky baby.

  • Sorry that you are going through this, it's a tough decision for sure. It sounds like you have a good RE who is looking out for your best interest. Hoping that you and your hubby are on the same page and the decision comes naturally.

DH and I have talked a lot about what we would do if IVF was our only option left. He seems to be okay with it, whereas I struggle with the idea of my child being conceived in a petri dish (which is odd, since I'm a scientist). I think more than anything I am afraid of that final option failing and what would happen after that. We are just starting our IF journey so I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything, it's overwhelming.

I think as long as you both are ready for the financial and emotional struggles that come along with IVF you should go for it. Like you said you aren't getting any younger and if you want something badly you have to be brave and step out of your comfort zone to fight for it.
