Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

sleep disruption question

My LO goes to sleep fine (at around 7:45 - 8:00 pm) and wakes up around 6:30 am, however, recently he has been waking up at around 2:00 am fussing and sitting up and sometimes standing, calling "mom" and then going back down in under 2 minutes and getting himself back to sleep. My husband has encouraged me to let him "work it out" when this happens.  I feel very bad not going in, but whenever I have done that in the past, it has always backfired; he thinks it's time to play and he does want to go back to sleep. What do people think is going on? Could it be teething (which we know he is experiencing)?  Something else?  Advice for best way to handle?

Re: sleep disruption question

  • DS has been doing this lately too. We give him five minutes. He has only gone past the five minutes once. That time I thought he might be a little hungry so I gave him some milk. He sucked it down and I put him down. He rolled over and went back to sleep so I figure maybe he just needed some extra calories that day or something.

Our guy has been doing this on and off for many many months.. We usually attribute it to gas that is strong enough to wake you from a deep sleep. By now, I think it could be a variety of things; gas, random noise, light sleep cycle moment, a cough, itch, bumped into a teddy bear in his crib, a dream/nightmare. We almost never go in unless crying happens and it goes on and on for beyond 5/10 minutes and he's always worked it out. It feels bad, but your husband is right-- they need to learn to be able to settle themselves back to sleep on their own. Can't wait til sleep issues are all over!!!

  • We're the exception over here, but DD wakes MOTN when she wets her diaper.  Doesn't even have to be a lot, but when she pees, she gets restless (very light sleep).  Once I change her, she goes right back to tsleep.
