Parenting after a Loss

Lets talk yogurt?

Ok so everywhere that I read they say no cows milk until a year? But then I read that you can introduce yogurt? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't yogurt cows milk? I mean I'm sure you can get another form but from what I read it's just yogurt? If I was to do yogurt it would be Greek. But if I can get some insight I would greatly appreciate it. I'm confused!

  • I THINK (am not 100%) what "they" mean is they don't want you to replace formula/breast milk with cows milk until after 1yo. You can introduce milk products though. I found Dannon All Natural Plain Yogurt and the only ingredient in it was whole milk. I was surprised DS would eat it that way but he does.

  • Yogurt and milk is not the same.  Lactose is broken down in yogurt and cheese.  Yogurt is much safer for babies earlier on.  I think we started yogurt at 9 months.  Just be careful with greek yogurt because it is very thick. You could add something to thin it out.  We started with yobaby yogurt.  My son is 19 months and now loves Greek yogurt.

I agree with pp's.  No milk replacing formula/bm until after 1 year.  Cheese and yogurt are ok.  We give LO YoBaby simply plain yogurt with fruit puree mixed in.

All of this.  Greek yogurt is just regular yogurt strained, so you can add some water back in to thin it.  We started with plain Greek yogurt at around 10m, I think, and added in a small amount of pureed fruit.  He wouldn't take it plain as it was too tart.  Plus, the fruit thinned it a bit.

ETA:  Also, most formula is milk-based.  Like another poster said, I think the issue is that they don't want you to replace BM/formula with cow's milk yet. The vitamins and minerals are not the same (neither is the sugar to protein balance), and too much milk early on can upset the baby's digestive tract.

  • Thank you! Now it definitely makes sense. Jackson is on breast milk and I plan to continue at least a year! And based off what you ladies were saying I think we will start off with regular yogurt then go to Greek

  • Great question!! I had asked my ped about introducing yogurt at DS's 6mo well visit and she said to wait until a year.. I wonder why???  I never asked our other Ped when we went for his 9mo check...

Needless to say, he's had bites of my yoplait greek with fruit in it and he's handled it just fine.. I've not yet given him a "substantial" amount.. but, maybe I will try it now that I see so many others have done it!  Would be nice to switch up his breakfast some -- poor kid eats oatmeal and fruit every morning!!

We do yogurt and cottage cheese. We eat a little of everything. We don't have any serious food allergies so I haven't considered much as off limits.
