Baby already weighs 8 pounds, should I be scared?

I'm due Friday and my doctor had me go for an ultrasound just to double check the baby was right side down and to size her.  I was told she already weighs 8 pounds! I'm getting a little nervous now for L&D!!  Eeeek!

Re: Baby already weighs 8 pounds, should I be scared?

  • I don't see why you should be that worried, especially when your due Friday. Even if you happen to go over, the baby shouldn't get much bigger. Many women deliver 9+ babies all the time. I think that you'll be just fine.

  • Those can be off and even if she was, 8 pounds isn't big and she is not likely to gain much more. Like pp said millions of women have delivered bigger babies. You will be fine.

  • I had my 38 week appt and my doc told us that baby girl is now 7.5 lbs and if I go two more weeks will possibly be 8.5. She also said that they can be off a pound or 2 in either direction so we'll see.... a 9.5 lb baby will prob hurt lol but hey as long as she's healthy I don't care how much she weighs!

Mine was estimated 10lbs 10 oz on Monday, so personally I don't think you should be worried at all! That sounds like a very normal healthy range. My giant on the othe other hand is like 95 plus percentile...eek!

  • My sister's baby was estimated to be 10 lb 6 oz at her 40 week scan and a week and a half later when she delivered he was 8 lb 9 oz, so I wouldn't put too much thought into what those scans say. If they're estimating 8 lbs you're probably right on track for a perfectly average size baby, so try not to sweat.

  • My oldest weighed just over 8 pounds...I don't consider it that big.

Also, two weeks before I delivered I was told my babies were 6lb and 6lb10oz and could gain 1/2lb a week.  They were 6lb3oz and 7lb1oz at delivery, so clearly the early estimates were more than they actually weighed.

My husband was 12 lbs at birth, delivered vaginally with no meds. I'm pretty sure you can do it.

  • With DS, they estimated his weight at or around 9 pounds. He came out at 7 pounds, 10.4 ounces. The  sonograms are still estimates, not definitive amounts.

im pretty sure my vagina and I would refuse....after a healthy dose of whatever drugs I could get!!!

  • Thanks ladies!  I think I'm starting to get a little hyper-focused on what the delivery will be like and psyching myself out!
  • Try not to worry about it too much. My LO was estimated to be 8lb15oz and ended up at 8lbs8oz. Delivery was not that bad and I feel fine 2 weeks out.

  • My doctor said 7.5 to 8 is normal, so I don't see why 8 is anything to worry about...
  • My Dr estimated my LO to be 8lbs 11 oz at my 38 week appointment.  He said the baby will gain half a pound a week but also that there is a 15-20% margin of error.  My doula told me not to worry about it.

    This. Don't worry about it.
  • No, don't be scared, you are fully capable of birthing your baby!!  Your body knows what to do, just let it happen.Smile

  • My LO is estimated at about 8lbs, and she's in the 95th percentile for everything. This was at 37 weeks. I'm not worried. it's an estimate for a reason, and they are known to be off.

If a lady can deliver a 15lb baby in England, then you can deliver an 8lb baby. :)

  • My "8 to 9 lb baby" came out at 5 lb 13 oz. Not saying that your measurements will be that far off, but I don't trust the accuracy of an ultrasound  weight at all.

  • I wouldn't be too worried. I asked my Dr. how they predict the weight and she told me that they measure their legs, arms and circumference of the head and then they estimate the size of the baby. This is probably why they can be off by a bit.

  • I had a growth ultrasound at 36 weeks 5 days and they estimated he weighed 7lbs 10oz and said his head was measuring 41 weeks 5 days. I'm super nervous now so I totally feel your pain! My husband was a really big baby and I know a lot of women who have delivered REALLY big babies...but seriously...my crotch hurts just thinking about it. I'm sure we'll both be okay though! Smile Good luck!

My first two kids were 8lbs 6oz and 9lbs 3oz and I survived vaginal births! This baby is measuring around 7-7.5 lbs, but my doctor said the measurements can vary.

For the record, I was told my 2nd son would be around 8 lbs, and he was the one who was over 9! I don't put that much faith in the estimates.
