fussy evenings

I just wondered if anyone else has this issues. We don't see the doc again until the first week of June so we are trying to make it through.

LO is happy and eata well all day. He is not overly gassy or fussy. He is on half breastmilk half formula.

Starting around 6 to 7pm he gets fussy. He wants to eat every hour. Sometime he is gassy but not arching his back. We rock and swaddle and sing. If we can we will put him in the stroller and get moving. Sometimes these things work...sometimes they don't.

At around 9 to 930 we give a bath, swaddle, and take his last bottle. He usually sleeps 4 to 5 hrs at this time. He wakes once in the night to eat and sleeps well.

Its frustrating because if it were his milk I would think he would be fussy during the day also. Also, the eating every hour is hard because sometimes he will eat 3 oz...a full bottle for hin...and sometimes just one so its a tierng process.

Anyone else experiencing evening fussyness?

Re: fussy evenings

  • Sounds like the witching hour. Normally, that's when the child is tired.. That's all it is. I personally would recommend his bedtime routine to start a little early. I'd honestly start at 7, instead of 9. He may be over tired at that point. Just a suggestion.

Sounds like normal baby behaviour to me! Many babies have a fussy period in the evening, it is sometimes referred to as the witching hour as PP said.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel though! Fussiness usually peaks around 6 weeks, and then slowly and gradually gets better.  By 3 to 4 months, it should have passed.  I am dealing with it too so I understand the frustration.  Hope it gets better for you soon! :)

  • I am also experiencing this, but it just started a few nights ago for us. My Lo is 7 weeks old and will drink anywhere from 4oz to 8 oz in a two hour span. We start our night routine at 8. Lastnight after his bath he zonked right out and slept until one.

I was wondering if maybe these growth spurts were causing the pain?
  • I agree with PP about it maybe being his witching hour.  I am currently experiencing this as well.  Some nights DS goes right to sleep after evening bath and bottle and some nights we battle.

Wow - 8 oz seems like so much! We're experiencing this too...fussy in the evening. I can put him down anytime between 630-800 and he'll maybe sleep and then wake up fussy or just not go to sleep and be fussy. Last night wasn't too bad - put him down at 730 and he never slept, just wanted to be held and fussed for a bit while we held him and I put him down at 830.

  • Yep, totally normal but not fun! It's the witching hour(s) when our LOs are just overloaded from the day and have a hard time settling down. They tend to want to cluster feed around this time. For us right now some evenings are easy (he is calm and goes down easily by 7pm) and some evenings are hard (fusses on and off and won't sleep until he crashes around 9:30). But he does seem to sleep for longer stretches after a fussy evening, so that's the silver lining! This should pass by 3 months or so. . . looking forward to that!

  • I agree that 8 oz is a lot, but he gets super hungry then. At least It's over a few hour span and not all day. It sounds like there is a light at the end of the tunnel for us though, which is good!
  • I agree with everyone about the witching hour. My LO starts around 7 so that is when we start a bedtime routine now. Sometimes he will cluster feed too. It has gotten better now that he has established his own schedule each day. I use his cues but it seems like it is pretty much the same things at the same times give or take 30 min each day.

  • Thanks ladies. This is baby number three but my youngest is 7! We did the last nursing or bottle at 10pm with both of them but they dropped that feeding and had settled into a 7pm bedtime by 3 months. So that's what we were doing this time around.

I should have mentioned my LO is actually 4 months but adjusted he is only 6 weeks. He has only been doing this about 2 weeks. It was hit or miss at first but has turned into more of a everynight thing. He is so happy go lucky during the days so I fell very strongly there is no need to go switching formulas at this time.

We are going to attempt to move up our bedtime routie but I'm not sure how it will go with the big kids up till 8. We shall see! Thanks Again!

  • We go through the same thing every night around 7. It is very frustrating especially since that is what time my husband gets home from work. So poor guy comes home to a fussy baby every night. We found out from a friend that the exercise ball works wonders! We sit on the ball with our LO and hold her and bounce gently and she immediately calms down and usually actually falls asleep. Try that it may help calm him down.

We have been and its  totally normal. Should resolve by 3-5m of age. GL.
  • This is normal...unfortunately!  If you have problems soothing LO watch the video or read Happiest Baby on the Block.  It's works magic for us.  I can soothe LO and have her with her eyes closed in minutes.  I downloaded the video from Amazon during a melt down and the strategies worked the first time.
