Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Those who have ferberized

So am I being cruel or is this all part of the sleep training thing. LO is 3 and a half months, still swaddled, sleeps in RnP and gets rocked to a full sleep.  We're going to start Ferber at 5 months.  Would it be cruel to tackle everything when we sleep train (no swaddle, in crib, and train to fall asleep on her own).  Do you think I should try to wean from swaddle and try for the crib beforehand?  The thing is, I've tried both and have failed miserably so I thought maybe it'd just be easier to do everything cold turkey but I don't know if that would significantly impact sleep training.  Thanks in advance!

Re: Those who have ferberized

  • My LO is 4.5 months and still swaddled. We recently transitioned to one arm out, and no swaddle when he naps in his swing (he often starts naps in his crib, but wakes after 30 min and has trouble falling back asleep).  He's getting better at self soothing by sucking his fingers, but he's still learning. I'm not going to "ferberize" him until I know he can self soothe. You'll be amazed in the next few weeks how much better your LO will get at using her hands - that might help the transition.

We also started putting LO down drowsy after rocking and now put him down fully awake (we rock and sing as part of our routine, but not until he sleeps). He fusses a bit but will fall asleep on his own 90% of the time.

Do you let you LO play in her crib at all? We do a bit of play time every day in there and he really likes it now. I usually put him in there with a toy or prop up a picture book while I run his bath at night. It's helped him get used to his crib.

  • Thanks! I definitely need to start getting her in the crib more during the day to play a little and get used to it. I think I'm going to try the one arm out in her swaddle too. She's just such a crappy napper that I never want to do it out of fear that she won't sleep at all. What gives me hope though is her strong desire to suck. She started sucking on her hands pretty much from day 1 so I think that will help her a ton when it comes to self soothing

  • Not sure if I will ferberize or not but here's the order we have/will do it. My LO is 4.5 months.

    1. transition from RNP to crib for about a week or two (still swaddled)

    2. Crib and no swaddle for a few weeks (this is where we are now)

    3.  Drowsy but awake put downs

    4. Sleep training (probably closer to 6 months)

  • How did your LO do with the RnP transition. DD is 3 and a half months so it looks like you did it around that time as well. So far we aren't having any luck. Her naps suck anyway, 30 mins tops, but even shorter in crib and night time, shes up within a half hour if we start her in the crib.

Well I kind of had to do it because he was getting a little too big for it (he's huge!). I think at first he was happy to stretch out. Naps I didn't see any difference because my LO never takes a nap longer than 30 minutes no matter where he is (RNP, car, stroller, crib, swing, etc.) I finally just realized that is him and maybe it will change maybe not.

I just made sure the swaddle was tight, noise machine on, bedtime routine consistent. I also bumped up his bedtime so he wasn't over tired. He will fight it bad if he goes down too late.  It took a few days but seems to be working.

As far as unswaddling goes, I just tried it randomly every few days. Its funny I remember thinking OMG he is never going to be able to do this (hands going nuts, lol). I didn't push it and just tried again a few days later. Finally one day it was like he was ready, and I just swaddled him arms out and it was fine- so weird!

Not sure as he's not been ready the few times I've tried. I'll probably start with his morning nap because that's the easiest put down for me. This morning when I put him down he popped an eye open but closed them again which he has never done before. Lol it's the little things I guess.

  • I wouldn't be in a rush to de-swaddle. If it's working for you, keep up with it. I would think it'd be a nice familiar comfort to LO as you move to the crib and start to put him/her down awake. Good luck!
  • We used ferber on DS1 but not until much later (he was almost 1 yr old).  By then, we had done everything else in stages, so he was unswaddled, in his crib, and only the putting himself to sleep part was left.  I think all at once might be tougher...?

  • I haven't ferberized, but I do think that changing a bunch of things at once would be harder on LO. If you take away one "comfort," at least LO has others to sort of fall back on... but if you take away a bunch at once, LO might not know what hit them. Just my two cents, which is probably worth less than $0.02 as I have almost no relevant experience. GL!
