Pregnant after IF

Confused and angry with doctors...

We had our big visit to the hospital where we plan to deliver in Richmond (3 hrs away) on Thursday.  We had an u/s, met with MFMs, neonatologists and toured the NICU.  Our MFM here in Roanoke was very concerned about growth for baby girl.  The u/s in Richmond showed she was right on track with everything and those doctors were not at all concerned.  They were surprised by the concern of our local docs.

Well, we go back to the local MFM today.  I do like my MFM, but unfortunately today we saw the other one.  We have been to this office 10 or 11 times.  Every time but 1, we have seen the same doc.  I HATE the lady we saw today.  She is a cold, beach.  There was zero communication between the two of us because she is an incompetent idiot.  Somehow baby girl LOST 5 oz since Thursday.  Baby boy LOST 4 oz since Thursday.  She had no explanation for why their measurements were so different (and behind) those we got in Richmond.  She get very defensive and gave no answers or information about anything.

The technology is much better in Richmond and me and DH both felt like the u/s techs there took their time to be more accurate.  A 2.5 week difference is a pretty big deal.  I will NEVER see this doc again.  I plan to try to talk to my regular doc tomorrow, but I feel like I have lost all faith in my local MFMs.  I'm so confused and don't know who to trust at this point.  AHHHH

  • You're delivering 3 hours away because they have better doctors and medical equipment for your babies, right? Then I'd trust them over the cold beach. I definitely think you should use your MFM and not the partner if the partner is causing you more stress. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this on top of everything else!

  • I'm sorry your so frustrated. We've been DX'd (last week) with growth restriction in Baby Avocado. It is frustrating and I do trust our doctors, but when I've questioned things, the u/s techs and my OB have been very honest in saying this (u/s measurements) aren't an exact science and there is without a doubt room for human error. Plus, after a certain point, the weight estimates alone can be off by as much as 15%. I had a BPP today and the tech did my fluid levels twice because baby was so active. In less than 3 minutes my levels went from "low end of normal" to "normal and where I have been" all because of how baby was moving/positioned. My own OB told me of another growth restriction case she delivered last week--they thought baby would be around 5 lbs 5 oz.....baby was born 6 lbs 5 oz. Off by an entire POUND. Hang in there and express your concerns with the person you've been seeing.

YAY for doctors that understand medicine is not an exact science.  My normal MFM understands that.  Unfortunately, this lady says everything with 100% confidence and acts like she and her u/s tech cannot be wrong.  There is no error...grrr.

  • I would be livid. I would def talk to your normal doc and perhaps you should go to Richmond if possible one or twice before you deliver to make sure things are still on the proper track. Does your MFM have an older level 2 u/s machine?

  • How incredibly frustrating.  The best part of this is that you do have the right to refuse treatment from that MFM. I hope your next appointment goes better.

Side note- I didn't realize you were a Virginia girl, I'm about an hour in the opposite direction of you from Richmond!
