Natural Birth

Another doula Q

I am looking into getting a doula for my second child. My first birth experience was HORRIBLE and I'm hoping to not have an experience like that again... That being said, I've had two doulas recommended to me. One recommended by a trainer with zero unattended births, I would be her first. She just finished her training this past March. The other has been a doula for a year with 9 births under her belt. I'm meeting with both of them over the weekend to get a feel for how we connect. My question is, would you let the fact that one has little experience while one has none as far as unattended births go, deterr your decision making? I'm just so new to this doula business!

Re: Another doula Q

  • Is there a cost difference? I wouldn't pay the same to be someone's first as I would for a more experienced doula.

  • We used a brand new midwife for our home birth, she was partnered with a very educated midwife with many years of experience. My midwife was amazing and her partner did absolutely nothing but just chill with us at our home birth. We were one of my midwife's first clients, and will be using her again for all subsequent births. When we initially met with her I had hoped for her more experienced counterpart, but I knew she was the one for us the more we talked. We ended up having the most amazing home water birth, so we were glad that we went with our intuition. :

I would totally consider the new doula! If your personalities click and you get awesome vibes from her and she makes you feel comfortable and at ease then I believe that is the most important thing. My doula basically continuously told me how awesome, strong and excellent I was doing, rubbed my back in all the right places, fetched me food and drinks, fed me Popsicles and made me feel like a warrior woman. This sounds funny but you will know when you have found the right doula for you!

  • There is a cost difference. The one with no unattended births is actually going to be willing to do it free of charge due to the fact we are a military family. I'm meeting with both over the weekend and I'm just going to have to trust in my gut feelings! From all that I have gathered, experience isn't everything and clicking is everything!
  • When I met mine, I knew in the first minute that it was a good match, and we hadn't even started talking about labor/delivery at all! You'll know!

  • I would go with the one you click with.  Birth is an emotional, personal, intense event (as you know from your first) so having someone there that you feel comfortable with is really important.  The student doula has probably observed many births by acting as an assistant but never attended one on her own.  Meet both of them and go with your instincts. GL!
  • If we were talking about someone who would be medically involved...then yes, I'd definitely want the one with more experience. But this is a doula. Someone there for emotional support and to remind you of the relaxation tools that you already know about. And to support your partner to support you better. You can't teach emotional support. People either have it or they don't. Like PP said, I'd go with the one that you click with the best. :o)

  • Go with the doula that you click with.

We used a student doula and I was actually her first birth. She was our Bradley instructor and we felt very comfortable around her. I knew she was knowlegable about birth due to the fact that she was a Bradley instructor. She had 3 births, 1st that involved every intervention possible including a c-section. 2nd one she became informed and she got her VBAC. 3rd was a very nescessary c-section. She did awesome at my birth and we used her again for DD2.

  • I'm going with a student doula myself. She has been to a handful of births for friends and family but I will be her first towards certification. She is free, which is awesome, but I also think that having a student is nice because she is so excited and invested. I met her once and we meshed super well. Go with your gut!
