Success after IF

Doppler

So I have a regular OB check on Wednesday (I should be 10w1d).  Do you think I should see if we can pick up the baby's heartbeat on the doppler?

History:  With my daughter the doc wasn't able to pick it up and I freaked.  With my son we could hear it loud and clear at 9w6d.

My next ultrasound isn't until the end of May so I don't know if I want to sit around and be worried for almost 2 weeks.

Wondering if I should just tell my doc to skip and wait until our ultrasound  ...

Re: Doppler

  • I would skip it unless he's willing to keep going until he finds it or willing to let you have an ultrasound right then.  I have been able to find the heartbeat at home using a doppler as early as 8 weeks, but it takes forever so yea, most docs aren't going to have that kind of time to spend hunting it down.  If it's going to drive you crazy then I'd wait.  Doesn't Dr. Bear still have the little portable ultrasound machine?  It doesn't figure out the heart rate but you can definitely see the heart beating.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • My OB wouldn't even try before 12 weeks. She used a portable office u/s machine to confirm the HB at my 9 wk appointment and used the Doppler at 13 weeks. To me it's not worth the stress when there is such a big chance it is too early to pickup the hb at 10 weeks.

All of this. They tried at 12 weeks with no luck and had to do an us just to verify. Not worth the stress.

Oh I have no clue!  He's never used a portable ultrasound machine with me and I don't think I've ever seen it out or anything either ... I'll ask :)

I'm sure he wouldn't do an ultrasound right then and there.  He didn't when he couldn't pick it up with my daughter (I think I was only like 9w and maybe 3d or something really early like that).  He just told me it was fine and that it was too early.  I did have an ultrasound already set up for 10w that time though so maybe that had something to do with it?

Like I said though, he dopplered me with my son at 9w6d and the heart beat came roaring through immediately.

But I kinda agree that I'll just be worried if the same thing that happened with my daughter happens again and this time I'll have to be worried for weeks not just a few days.  And my baby's 1st birthday is coming up in a week and I don't want it to be ruined with me freaking out the entire time instead of having fun and enjoying him!

I just can't help but wonder what the point of even going to that appointment really is if we don't listen for the heartbeat!
