Parenting after a Loss

Q about BLW

If you blw when did you start?  I read the BLW book and I thought it was strange how rigid they were about 6 months, yet they'd say that babies can't feed themselves before they are developmentally ready for food. We told her ped we planned to try BLWing and he said we could start at 5-6 months. I know babies develop at different rates so I'm having a hard time seeing how each baby is magically ready at exactly 6 months and none are ready before. I don't see why it'd be a problem to let her have food at 5 months even if she only plays with it at that point.

It's been awhile since I read the book but I don't remember it being too focused on age versus readiness. A child should be sitting with minimal support, reach out and grab effectively, chew on toys, show interest in food, and take objects to the mouth. There have been a lot of studies showing that delaying solids until six months is better for the development of the digestive track. There is nothing magical about turning six months but it is the age the average child should show all the signs of readiness.

Since my boys were preemies we attempted it, with the pedi's approval, at six months actual. My boys had absolutely zero interest. We tried again when they were six months adjusted and they would eat a little. It's honestly only been in the past two months that they have really gotten the hang of it and begun to love meal time.

  • Ditto what Missa said! It's more about readiness than age. I know for us, DD actually wasn't really ready until about 7 months, though we started offering at 6.
