3rd Trimester

Bacterial vaganosis

Has anyone had this?  I have twice this pg. with minimum symptoms but just felt slightly off.  First time oral abx and second time given vaginal suppositories.  I am now thinking I need tested again.  Ob said this is common to get due to changing ph.  I asked if dh can get/pass back to me and they said no.  Just wondering why it keeps coming back.

  • Not this but I did have my very first yeast infection ever during this pregnancy.

Maybe Google some natural remedies? Good luck!

  • I had it at 34 weeks, a 7 day regimen of oral antibiotics cleared it right up.  I thought I just had more discharge than normal.
  • Your doc is right, it is very much tied to hormone and pH balance. Some women are just more prone to it as well. It is not something your husband can get because it is not a true infection, but an overgrowth of our normal vaginal 'good' bacteria. When the pH balance gets off kilter, the body recruits more 'good' bacteria to try to get the balance back. It is definitely something that needs treated in pregnant women, but in non-pregnant women treatment is only necessary if they have symptoms.

  • I would abstain from sex for a while after your treated. It can be transmitted from you to your partner.

    This!

I have one now and am on antibiotics to treat it. According to my Dr. it can be transmitted to my H.

  • I've had it twice. My only symptom was a ton of braxton hicks contractions.

Your DH cannot get it, but sex can cause it/make it worse.

  • I've been told by doctors that once you have BV, it tends to come back again in the near future. I had it several months before I got pregnant, and then again when I was in my second trimester. There was absolutely nothing that would have caused it to happen the second time except just the ph level (I was on pelvic rest, nothing was going around that area). It is really frustrating, it seems like it just happens if it wants to happen.

The second time I had it, I noticed it because my discharge changed to yellow and would have a reddish tint sometimes (apparently my cervix was irritated so it was bleeding some). It felt itchy but I never noticed a smell or anything. It can be hard to spot.

  • It's not truly transmitted from your partner. What happens is the semen changes the acidic environment of the vagina. The vagina creates more of its usual bacteria because this will increase the acidity of the vagina and re-establish the pH. So abstaining from intercourse does help while your body is trying to get back to normal. Another cause of frequent BV in some women is the pH changes that occur with their periods. Blood and semen have a much higher pH than the vagina which can create that imbalance. It was thought in the 80s and prior that men could contract BV, but that theory has been overturned.

  • I got it once.  Then I started using Rephresh (available at any pharmacy type store, walmart, etc.) I did that every three days as recommended (totally harmless) and then decided that I would try just taking acidophilus capsules 1x day with my doctor's approval.  Haven't gotten it since :)  I also do not use any floral smelling soaps in my private areas and insure that I change underwear frequently, etc. Good luck.
