Got a message on FB...

Typically, my FB friends are my actual friends and family.  Except for my soccer team mates from the past.  I like keeping tabs on them as they start their families, etc.

On Friday, I took the boys to a park across town that has a cool water park (think obstacle course type stuff for kids with water spraying all over).  I posted photos on FB, and got a message from one of my old soccer team mates.  She was letting me know that she is a probation officer, and that this park is the WORST in our city.  It's highly dangerous -- gang activity and drug deals.  She meets her clients at this park every week.

My first thought is, Why are you taking former criminals to a place that is supposed to be family friendly?

My second thought is that this SUCKS, I can't knowingly take the kids back there with this information.  Now, we have to find a new park...  :(  The boys don't understand this, all they understand is that I can't take them back there.

  • Do you see stuff about it on the news? Did it look suspicious while you were there?

Truth --  I don't watch the news.  Ever.

We are there when it opens at 11am.  I have seen plenty of homeless folks laying in the shade of large trees and some folks sitting at picnic benches that are far away from the water park.  Nobody has ever approached me, nor my kids.  I've never had my mommy radar go off while I've been there.

You can google a crime map of your city and see if you find anything of real concern there. Honestly, if I didn't feel uncomfortable while I was there I wouldn't let one random message deter me from going.

I agree with this. I'd stick w/ first thing on week days. If you don't have any mommy radar going off and nothing looks off or suspicious, I'd probably be okay with it. Maybe poke around to see if it's true that a lot of incidents occur there.

Are there other kids and parents there that seem to be on the up and up?

    Agreed.

This was my initial reaction, and Jay's totally on board with me still taking them.  We've been there at opening and later in the day.  There are kids there with parents from all different walks, and I've never felt threatened.  Actually, the ladies there the last time we went last year drove away in a Bentley and a Range Rover.  I don't want to care about this message, but it's really got me mind-fvcked.
