XP - Stroller dilemma - Bob, CityMini, Uppa, Bugaboo

Ugh, still stuck on this decision. We will definitely get a Bob Revolution for jogging as we're both serious runners. I realize this *could* be our main stroller but its heavy and cumbersome, and a little larger than I'd like for daily use.

I was thinking I'd go with the City Mini GT. We live in Colorado so there are lots of opportunities to use the bigger/off road wheels on the GT. But the gal at the baby store says this is duplicative. She's pointing me back to the City Mini which I like just fine, love that its only 17 pounds and folds super easily.

Buuuut, now I'm wondering if I should have gone with an Uppababy or Bugaboo. I like the bassinet feature of these models. If you had one, how long

While I work now, I dont think I'll go back after the baby gets here. We live in the city with lots of opportunities to walk everywhere. Our condo is on the smaller side and I don't have a large foyer to store the  stroller when I first get in the door. I pictures myself taking multiple walks per day, and leaving the stroller in the hallway. So it needs to be on the smaller side. FWIW, we registered for the Chicco Keyfit 30.

Can any of you comment on what you liked, disliked about these brands; and/or weigh in on which direction you would go? Thank you!

Re: XP - Stroller dilemma - Bob, CityMini, Uppa, Bugaboo

  • I am a FTM, but after a lot of research and talking to people, I am getting the Uppababy Cruz. It is super light weight, but lighter than the Vista and stands up when folded (we are keeping it in the hallway too, it gets really thin). We live in the city too and thought it was best for us. We liked the CityMini, but I read mixed reviews about the car seat adapters. I am also getting the Keyfit 30. The Cruz now has the bassinet option too, we aren't going to get it though.

  • I would get something small and lightweight. I would look at the chicco liteway plus. It folds up small, lightweight, and can be used as a stroller system. I wouldn't get the city mini gt, but I would consider the city mini. Or get the britax b agile and safe combo.
  • I LOVE our City Mini!  It is very light, so easy to fold and actually works really well on things like grass, gravel, etc.  I have taken it on many hikes with no terrain issues, the only thing it has not worked on is sand.

  • i was between the uppababy and bugaboo. they are both very similar and u can use the basinet for 6 months approx.

im going with bugaboo personally i like it better and personally think its prettier. you need to go to the store and see what u prefer. gl!

If you're super serious about using the running stroller for running, what about the Bob Ironman or Baby Jogger Fit? A bit better suited, not that the Revolution isn't excellent!

For daily strolling we're looking at the City Versa. It is actually a touch narrower than the City Mini and is trimmer when folded slightly too, and the same length. Only thing is that it is heavier. I personally love how easy it is to push and that you can have the seat facing both ways, plus it can fold with the seat in either direction. You can get a bassinet for it too.

If you get the Revolution then you can just use that for offroading excursions and not worry about the non-gt wheels of the City Mini or Versa. Good luck :)
  • I've had the City Mini GT for a week now and so far I like it a lot.  however, in your case, I agree the GT & the BOB is a bit of an overkill.  I'm SAHM and I go out for walks daily on a bike path w/DS.  The City Minis have a HUGE canopy which is essential.  The City Mini is quite a few pounds lighter than the GT so I'd recommend that.

DS is 6 months now - prior to last week, we've been using his car seat + snap-n-go.  I was still walking with him daily (when weather permits) with the snap-n-go.  You may consider that an option.  Since DS was a New England fall/winter baby, there were many weeks we weren't able to go out for walks due to snow/ice.  I just did NOT want to buy a real stroller a year early and store it in the basement.  By waiting until DS is 6 months old, I was able to get a 2013 model and use it right away.

Ditto. If you are only going to be using it for running you might as well get the fixed wheel because you'd never run with the wheel unlocked. Plus I loved my Ironman. And if you think the single is big you should see the duallie!

  • Actually the vista is great in our tiny apartment entry. The key to the uppababy vista is that it stands up on its wheels when folded, so it goes against the walk without taking up much room. The baby jogger strollers don't do that. I also agree that the gt is duplicative with a bob.

I love my ubv as a city stroller. The basket is awesome for grocery shopping while out on a walk. I do use it in the car as well, but I think eventually I will end up with an umbrella stroller for the car, but that day still hasn't come yet.

I was going to say the same about serious running = Ironman. Or P&T Sub4 or  Chariot. Even if you got the Ironman/Revolution, you could still use it for off terrain and get a smaller lightweight stroller.

I like the Cruz and the City Versa, they weren't out when I got my last stroller (went with the Smart, love it btw). I'm not a fan of the City Mini (or GT model) after seeing them in person. I didn't find the GT wheels to be big at all (it's a must, I walk through snow and those wouldn't have made it).

I have the city mini gt as my main stroller, but keep the chicco click n go in my trunk for quick trips. It has an awesome basket and is super lightweight.

All of this. Having the bassinet was important to me as IMO I don't like the thought of an infant in his carseat all the time, and we go out multiple times a day for walks, running errands, etc. I would definitley go check them all out in a store though, I was initially between the bugaboo and the vista and after looking at them, decided on the vista.

  • I was looking at the City Mini GT, but the reviews on Amazon had a lot of the same two complaints (front wheel locking up and stroller tipping over with baby in it) so I ruled it out. I like the BOB Revolution a lot, but ended up with the Baby Jogger Summit XC over the weekend, because it has the same one handed fold as the City Mini. I will use that as my jogging/trail stroller and get an umbrella stroller for the strolls around the city.

Up until now, I've been using the Chicco KeyFit Caddy. It is great, get one. And you can find them used for half the price.

If you are definitely getting the BOB I would add a semi lightweight reversible to round things out.  I would do the Baby Jogger Versa.  It's got really good suspension for different types of terrain, it folds fairly small, and it reverses.  Sounds like a nice fit and compliment to your BOB and I know quite a few people who love the Versa as their one and only stroller.  You can get a bassinet for it as well.  I had a Vista with my daughter and I loved the bassinet for walks before she was 6 months so that's another great option as well.  The basket on the Vista is awesome!

Skip the City Mini, its overrated in my opinion especially if you aren't in and out of the car all the time.  The wheels really aren't great for what you are describing.

Also, I agree that a fixed wheel jogger would be more ideal for serious running.

  • I'd get the bugaboo bee. You don't need it to be able to go off road (although the Bee does surprisingly well on the terrain in the woods near my friends).

  • I have both the UBV and the City Mini.  I really really love the UBV and we did use the bassinet.  Alot of people don't use it, but we live in a condo in the city and he slept in the bassinet every night!  I loved the ubv because it can face both directions and when he was a little baby, i liked that he could face me.  Now that he is older, we keep him facing out.  It's great for walks in the city because the basket holds so much--so if you're going to the park and need to take a lot of stuff, then it's perfect for that!  We keep it parked in our condo also and it's never been an issue.

However, if you're going to get the ubv AND the bob...you will definitely need a lightweight stroller later.  the ubv is really heavy and if you're going in and out of a car or you need to fold to go on a subway or whatever--it's not great.  We use our City Mini for that.  I love the city mini because it is the easiest fold ever....and much lighter.   I have an older one (2011) and the basket sucks.  I have to hang the diaper bag on the handle and if you need to take a lot of stuff for a walk, it's not ideal.  however, i think the newer models have a better basket?

     good luck on stroller shopping!

  • We also have a UBV and love it. If you are planning on taking walks without the car, the bassinet option would be great. It is not good for babies to sit in their carseat for extended periods if not needed. It gives the best angle for protection in a crash, not the best angle for breathing. I find that the wheels are great for off roading through parks and whatnot. UBV also has a great canopy for sun protection. I think one of the best. I would go try them out in person to decide what will work for you. The UBV is heavy so we recently purchased a Uppa GLuxe for airplane travel, but I still prefer my UBV for most use. If you are in Denver, the baby store in the highlands lets you take the strollers out on the sidewalk to test them. That solidified our decison.

  • Thanks you guys. These have all been really helpful. I've spent two sessions at two different stores, and am going back to meet with the manager (who does all the in-depth product demos at the store) today. Am I being overly neurotic? Probably... but that's just me.

I had narrowed it down to the Vista and Select... but now thing I'll add in the Cruz and Versa as options too. Hoping that after today I can be sure of my decision. There are too  many options and frankly, I'll probably be happy with any of them but also have minor annoyances with any of them as well.

The biggest plus to the Versa or the Bee is that they can fold parent facing.  I had a Vista and I did really love it but I found that I didn't use the parent facing mode very much in and out of the car because I had to take the seat off to fold it and that was a pain.  If you are primarily walking from your house then that won't be much of an issue but if you are in and out of the car a lot, it's definitely something to consider.
