Help! Baby proofing new townhouse

We are moving next month from our condo to a townhouse. Tons more space, but also a lot more worries. It is a three level home with the top level having a loft that over looks the living room. Plus there are tons of steps now to gate off. We are still renting so can't do any long term solutions. If you have suggestions for the following I would be very grateful!

1. Gates when there are spindles from the banister on one side (there is no way to do a gate a t the bottom of the stairs as the banister ends early)

2. A long gate for a 6foot opening

3. What to do with the loft opening. The slates are definitely too wide apart. Netting? Plastic?

  • I don't have PERSONAL experience with any of those, but I know there are products on the market for all of those things.

They make gates (or at least kits to add on to gates) that allow you to attach them to the bannister. Google "bannister safety gate" or something like that.

As long as your biggest opening is 6 feet, there are a lot of options for gates. (Our big opening is 80", so 8" too wide for most gates. Ugh.) I saw a lot of gates that expand to 72" when I was shopping for one for our 80" doorway.

As far as the gaps between slats, there are a few things made specifically for that purpose - this is one of them: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2328540 You could probably rig something up on your own, too.

Check out both One Step Ahead and Right Start websites. I found both sites to have lots of safety proofing options.  After checking them out, I googled what I liked or went to Amazon to see if I could find the same products for cheaper - sometimes I did find things cheaper, other times their prices were best.

Also for your 6 ft space, I'm not sure from your desciption if you have the ablity to drill into walls, but if you do, check out retract-a-gate.com.  They are mesh "gates" that you can roll back when you don't need them.  We have a large space that we only want to block off some of the time and did not want a standing gate in the way all the time.  It's great. Not sure if they go as wide as 6 ft, but worth a look if you are able to screw in the brackets to your wall.

  • Thanks ladies! Love the idea of a retractable gate!
