Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby

My baby is 4 days old. :)

When you are at the hospital they give you all sorts of info about diaper changes and things, but I am a bit confused....They tell you that your baby should have a poopy diaper a day, but then they also tell you that they could go 48hrs without one?! so which is it? Should I be concerned that he did not have one yesterday?

Re: Baby

  • My ped says they can go 45 days without and its OK as long as there is no discomfort

  • Is your baby breast fed or formula fed?  Has your baby had a bowel movement since yesterday?  My LO at first had several poopy diapers (breast fed) but at about a week she started going 1 time every other day.  If LO doesn't seem in pain (grunting, bringing legs to chest) I wouldn't worry about it.

is your baby back at birth weight yet? Keep an eye on wet and poopy diapers today. Has your milk come in? The main concern that young is whether LO is getting enough to eat. My LO pooped about once or twic a day but once my milk came in he was pooping and peeing constantly so I knew I didn't have to be concerned. If you're worried LO isn't getting enough, a call to the pedi never hurts.

  • First, congratulations!

If you are BFing, I wouldn't worry too much about a poopy diaper every other day.  If he does not have one today either, maybe put a call in to your pedi just to be sure.  Pooping patterns for newborns and infants is all over the board in terms of "normal."  If you are FFing, I'm not sure.  Keep an eye on the number of wet diapers; if those are normal then you are probably okay.

After I posted this we went to Wal-mart and He decided at that time was the right time to have a poopy diaper! :)  Was crazy...no one in the restroom when we entered, but at soon as I had him on the diaper station and got the diaper opened up a "herd" of old ladies walked in...talk about nerve racking...lol was very interesting...    Yes he is breast fed, and now he is pooping many times a day. I remembered from when my oldest was little that the Dr said since I was BF he may not have one for a couple days, but that was when he was a couple months, not a couple days...I wasn't really "worried" at this point, just was wanting some feed back! :) thank you everyone! :)
