Odd counting/names association ?

DD1 knows how to count out objects using numbers,up to at least 10 dependably. She will often times bring a group of similar objects to me and tell me '2 balls" "3 babies" etc. She also always counts the number of stairs going up or down.

Just this week though, she has started "counting" objects using people's names instead of numbers. For example, she grabbed my hand and counted out fingers as "mama, daddy, her name, DD2's name,DD's 3 name" on one hand. She will only use as many names as their are objects and will go on to use Meme,Papa, Aunt?, Uncle?, etc.

Has anyone seen their child do this? Any idea what this is about? Just playing with word/number concepts?

  • sounds normal to me my 3 1/2 year old does something similar she counts in 2 languages and also names objects in 2 languages ( arabic and english )

  • Thanks for the reply, aiche.

I guess I should also add she always uses the same order of names when "counting" as well, if that makes any difference. I just feel like this is a little different then flipping between two languages. We use Spanish at home in addition to English and she interchanges English/Spanish often (ie cat/gato open/abierto). Just nothing like names in place of numbers so far. Could certainly just be typical quirky toddler stuff though.

My daughter does this, too.  She is currently obsessed with numbers and will find groups of two or three in everything and likes to count the stairs.  She is also learning how to use her fingers to indicate numbers so she'll do the same thing in counting off "mama', "dada", "ooma" (grandma), etc.

At the moment I feel like it is just her newest skill.  I have enough to worry about in terms of her development so I refuse to add something else to the list!  ;)

This could be quirky toddler behavior. It could also be a verbal stim/special interest as seen in ASD and OCD.

The swapping out numbers for names in a specific order sounds almost like a symptom of synesthesia. The specific order thing seems almost like each person is associated with a unique number.

Well,of course we are waiting for the EI ASD evaluation in June, and she certainly shows quirks of OCD with grouping, lining up,etc. She would get that part honest though,as I have diagnosed OCD.
