Rec your convertible car seat for tall kids

Hey ladies,
I was planning on getting a Britax seat because I had heard good things about them, but after reading some comments on this board and other places, I am having second thoughts.  MH and I are both tall, and at 4 months, DS is already 15 lbs. and 26.5 inches.  I am thinking we probably need to look into a seat that will last longer than the Britax Marathon we were planning on purchasing.  I am looking at the Graco My Ride--what other options can you guys throw out there for me?

TIA!

  • Diono Radian is a good tall seat.

  • I'm going to get the chicco nextfit. It is supposed to be easy to install and good for extended rear facing.
  • Depending on your budget I would look at the clek foonf, graco mysize70/size4me70/headwise, and the diono radian. Neither of my older two made it to 2 before outgrowing the marathon RF and it was outgrown FF by 3.

  • Foonf and Radian for sure. They're both expensive, but will last you a long time.

My vote would be for the MySize. We have that and the Radian right now. DD2 is just one down from the top slot in the Radian (2y8m, approx 38", 32.5 lbs, 15" torso). She'll outgrow it rear facing probably around 3 years. She still has 3 slots to move up to on the MySize.

Ive heard good things about the NextFit but haven't seen it in person. The Foonf would be awesome but is not in our budget.

I'm really liking this one!  Does anyone know a potential release date?  I'm thinking my little guy will outgrow his infant seat sometime this summer....

  • So, can I ask a question??

On the Britax website, it states the Marathon works for kids up to 49 inches.  Graco My Size and the Chicco Nextfit are only up to 50 inches.  So why are all of these kids outgrowing the Marathon so early?  I am just curious....I am a FTM and don't really have any friends who have kids in convertible seats yet.  Just trying to figure all of this out.  :)

You can preorder on babiesrus, they say the release date is March 23.

I preordered on albeebaby which says April.

I love my chicco keyfit, so I'm hoping ill love the nextfit too. I have a radian and I like it, but my husband hates installing it and refuses to buy another one. I looked at the graco mysize, but I wished it had more padding/eps foam. The foonf looks awesome, huge and pricey.
  • Amazon just sent me an email that the nextfit is available for preorder now and will be shipped April 30th

Carseats aren't really outgrown by overall height very often, but by seated height. A rear facing seat is outgrown when there is less than 1" from the top of the baby's head to the top of the shell. A forward facing seat is outgrown when either the shoulders are even with the top harness slots OR when the tops of the ears are even with the top of the shell, whichever comes first. Britax seats have notoriously short shells and shorter top harness slots than most of the competitors, so while the stated overall height limit may be the same or close to the same as other seats, in reality it will be outgrown far sooner. The other issue with britax RFing is that there is less leg room, so even if a kid technically fits they may be uncomfortable sooner than with other seats (and I'm a huge huge advocate or RFing as long as humanly possible).

Yep. DD1 outgrew the Marathon by height at 46" because she has a long torso. The headrest on the MySize extends enough that she just barely fits in that now at 51". IME, you need to look for the height of the top harness slot to find out how long the seat will last. Anything 17.5-18"+ is good.

  • If it is financially feasible and fits in your car properly, there is no seat I would consider other than a Clek Foonf. It is way ahead in terms of safety features than any other seat on the market at this time.

Diono.  My five and a half year old just went forward facing in hers.  She still had room to grow, and weight to gain, but I needed her forward facing
  • We have a very tall child (always in 95% + percentile) and we chose the Radian XTSL due to its height accommodation.
