Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Mucus in poop

So, I noticed a bit of stringy poop while my baby was teething and was told by several people (SIL, friends with babies, lactation consultant) that it is caused by excess mucus during teething. There is no discoloration, odd smells, blood, etc and it went away when his teeth popped through. Started again as the top ones began to come out. I asked my pedi today and she said she'd never heard of such a thing, the ONLY thing to cause mucus in stool was a food allergy. I was a bit surprised she was so dismissive and unaware... Has anyone else noticed a little stringy poop (mucus) during teething. She's made me paranoid now... TIA

Re: Mucus in poop

  • YUp, it is normal. Some docs are just completely unaware of some things or just shouldn't be docs lol.

THANK YOU! I told my DH I was alarmed she was so unaware!

  • Long time lurker here, now that the little one's five months, I'm beginning to have a bit of free time For posting here!

Anyways, just wanted to chime in to say that our daughter has had consistent mucous in her stools since about 2 weeks old onward, so obviously not teething. We've been trying to determine the cause since then and her pediatrician immediately suggested food allergies. All of the research I did online (I know, Dr. Google is not the best reference) agreed with the association of mucous in stools and food allergies in infants.

That said, I've eliminated various items in turn from my diet over the months (she's breastfed), dairy, soy, etc. with no success in getting rid of the mucous. I eventually gave up and resumed a normal diet and although her stools remain funky, she's gaining weight normally and is a pretty happy baby, save for crappy sleep habits, which is (probably) unrelated.

I do want to add that at the onset of her mucousy stools, I did occasionally find a tiny almost imperceptible fleck of blood, but that was rare and did not reoccur after a week or so at the beginning until a few days ago. Again the doctor is wanting to check her stools and this time is wanting to perform a "celiac panel" with possibly a referral to a GI specialist pending the results.

Sooo, basically, your little one's issues may not be teething (hopefully they are!), but I wouldn't necessarily freak out over food allergies either if she's otherwise healthy.
