Order of Events for Birthday Party

What's the typical order of events for a birthday party or what are you planning on doing (if you've started planning already)? I honestly can't remember the last time I went to a first birthday party.

And I'm trying to decide on the outfit situation for the party. LO has a t-shirt that matches her theme (ladybugs) with her name on it. I'm also planning on ordering a ladybug tutu and headband that I found on Etsy. I'm guessing she should wear the tutu for eating cake, right?

Thanks for the input/help!

  • With DD1 we just did an immediate family thing, since they are so young. She got crabby really fast after we let her have some cake. With this one, I'll probably do it right after her nap, around noon, and do immediate family again. I have a tutu and a white onsie, so she can get it all covered in frosting and cake, and I am going to take before and after pictures. I have a winter baby, so we are going to just do pizza and cake and tell everyone to get the eff out afterwords haha.

  • With DS1, we had immediate family over. We grilled, did cake and the opened gifts. Afterwards, we let DS1 play with his new toys while the adults chatted and then everyone left. It was quick and easy.

  • For DS, we had family and a few close friends. We did a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme. We basically just ate and hung out and the slightly older kids played. We let him smash and devour a cupcake. We had a photo guestbook for people to sign, but other than that we didn't have activities.

I was curious about that, because of what I've seen online. We will mostly have adults at the party with only a few kids. It's at a park and there is a playground/putt putt right beside the pavilion. I figured the kids could do stuff like that while the adults socialized. Plus, it's one more thing I don't have to plan! :)

  • I'm already trying to start planning DS's party too. We have such a gigantic family, I've got to get moving. Plus we'll be out of town the week before his big day! Yikes!

  • We had a big party for DD1s first birthday, mostly because we were moving out of town the following month so it was a good reason to see everyone.

We planned it for after her nap and basically ate and socialized, and after about an hour or so we played a slideshow of her photos with music and then did the cake cutting/happy birthday serenade. We didnt open gifts or have other activities. She wore a "birthday girl" shirt with a skirt for the whole party and a birthday girl bib for the cake eating only.

For DD1 each of her bdays I have ordered a shirt from sticheroos to match whatever my theme is. We have a large family on my side and DH's so we rent the golf course clubhouse for the party. Our house is tiny!

DD1 is a december Bday I usually have chilis and soups and make these little pizza squares. I decorate the place to match the theme. I get one little cake that is DD's bday cake and then make cupcakes and cookies.

People eat pretty quickly and when it seems like eveyone is starting to finish we sing happy bday to DD. At that point it is free for all. some get seconds some eat dessert or whatever. Towards the end we open presents but people are not around just watching they are still doing their own thing. After each present I make DD go thank that person. Exception is first birthday. She was too young to sit there and open all those presents. We opened grandparents and godparents and took the rest home.

We don't have activities unless you count coolers of beer as an activity for adults LOL!

I usually bring her plastic play slide and tunnel, but we didn't last year. Honestly there is not a lot of kids at her party and she just has fun getting to eat anything she wants and run around. I told DH once we move and I can have these at my own house I might try to do some fun games. She really hasn't been old enough yet.

We have a lot of close friends who pretty much all have kids so there were a decent number of people (maybe 40) at DS's first birthday. Since he was so young and there were a lot of people we didn't open presents at the party. We didn't really do any events. The kids mostly played with DS's toys and we had food, beverages, a splash table outside, bubbles, etc. About 1 1/2 in we did cake. Since we had a smash cake we took his shirt off for it, which was good because it got pretty messy. I would advise not wearing the cutesy stuff during the cake. We may borrow our friend's bounce house for DD's first birthday since DS and some kids his age will be there.
