@~>~ Mad Muscle May Week #3 ~<~@

Check-in for Week #3

Mad Muscle May is a simple plan to do a few strengthening exercises every single day, except for 1 rest day a week. The calendar has Sunday as the rest day, but you can pick a different day if you want.  The link to the full calendar is in my siggy. There is also a link to a Ballet Body May, in case you want to do that one instead.

This month's plan focuses on legs and core exercises. I put more variety in it this time, so if you have any questions about what exercises are, I would suggest checking out Google first & then let the group know if you have any questions. Disclaimer: I am not a personal trainer, just a dance instructor. This is meant to be for fun, encouragement, and a little bit of accountability to each other.

Week #3

Mon - 30 each: jump squats, yoga bridges, calf raises

Tues - 17 each: 5 second V sits & Side plank oblique crunches

Wed - 15 each: 90 degree kicks front, side, back, side (on each leg) and a 40 second wall sit

Thurs - 45 each: crunches, Russian twists, reverse crunches

Fri - Power Hour: Every hour do 2 sets of clock lunges on each leg OR 24 regular lunges alternating legs

Sat - 20 each: 5 second V sits & Side plank oblique crunches

Sun - rest

*Wednesday's kicks are based on grand battements in ballet. You can use a chair for support. Here is a video explaining them, if needed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgKXn1Evj-o

GTKY Questions:

Accountability -- Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week?

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week?

Least favorite?

Do you have any other health-related goals? (Diet, more sleep, de-stress, etc.)

  • GTKY Questions:

Accountability -- Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week? Yes and no. My hip was bothering me, so I had to modify some of the ones that were too painful.

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week? Yoga bridges

Least favorite? Reverse crunches. I was nervous about doing them because of the IUI last weekend. Irrational? Maybe. I just couldn't do them, though.

Do you have any other health-related goals? (Diet, more sleep, de-stress, etc.) Cutting back on alcohol and eating fewer things that aggravate my LPRD (reflux problem).

Accountability -- I did 4 out of the 6 days. I don't know what my problem is, but I always forget about Power Hours!!

Favorite exercise last week? 90 degree kicks (though doing these immediately after hill repeats was not a good idea, lol!!)

Least favorite? Power Hour just because I forget!!!

Do you have any other health-related goals? Maintain consistency with my running. I have a hard time sticking to it when I'm not in marathon mode, so my solution to this in the past was to always be in marathon training :-D But now that we are under treatment with an RE, I am told by the doctor to limit all of my exercise to under an hour a day. It's not possible to train for a marathon under those conditions, so it is challenging for me to stay motivated.

  • GTKY Questions:

Accountability Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week? No! I did terribly, only mon thru wed but I blame my four projects I had due, a doctors appt, and going to a dance competition all day Saturday. I have to do better next week.

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week? I used to dance and now teach so I may be partial towards the grand battements.

Least favorite? Those jumping squats will likely be my least fav all month.

Do you have any other healthrelated goals? Diet, more sleep, destress, etc. overall, just work on everything. This semester kicked my butt so my sleep is out of wack and I haven't been eating as healthy as I'd like to.

  • Accountability -- Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week? I changed the power hour day to Saturday since I can't really do it in the middle of teaching.  I crapped out about halfway through the day when I decided to take a nap.

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week? I reallly like the grande battements, they make me miss dancing.

Least favorite? I really struggle with wall-sits.

Do you have any other health-related goals? (Diet, more sleep, de-stress, etc.) My friend and I have decided to do the Couch to 5K program together.  We've both tried individually in the past, but have difficulty staying motivated.  She and I are hoping that we'll be able to keep each other motivated and get healthy together!

I am in the same boat this weekend, dance competition all weekend. I have to be there from 2pm-midnight on Friday, 9am-midnight on Saturday, and noon-midnight on Sunday. Going to be a crazy weekend! I'll have to remember to get my workouts in earlier during the week.

  • Accountability -- Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week?  Not all of them.

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week?  My favourite is still the yoga bridges.

Least favorite?  I really don't like power hour.  It's not practical for my day, especially, this past Friday working a double in the OR.  I did however, do tons of push ups at bootcamp on Thursday night so at least I got the arms in there.

Do you have any other health-related goals? (Diet, more sleep, de-stress, etc.)  My "diet" goal is to go completely paleo.  I've been completely gluten free, and can easily cut out grains, legumes, and dairy etc.  It's the SUGAR that I am struggling with.  My goal is to cut out sugar.  It is the hardest for me.

I taught my class Saturday morning, came home and showered, and left for the competition. The goal was to makeup for all the days I missed when I got home, but obviously that didn't happen!

I don't actually teach or work with the dance team. I just went to watch and support them bc it was the last one of the year. What types of dance do your girls do? What kind of dancing do you do?

I teach competitive level tap, lyrical, jazz, musical theatre dance, and hip hop.

I teach recreational level acro, pre-ballet, creative movement, contemporary, and all of the above competitive level stuff. (ETA: And stretch & strength classes and leaps & turns classes.)

The only thing that I really perform now is tap. That is my forte. I might be willing to do a little jazz and musical theatre under the right circumstances.  But I am 35 and not as flexible as I used to be, and I have injuries to contend with. So it's more difficult to perform at the level that I used to, unfortunately.

    What do you teach?

GTKY Questions: Accountability -- Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week? I did pretty good! Missed the power hour - but I did the MS walk on saturday (6 miles) which is a lot for me right now.

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week? The 90 degree kicks, no questions. I actually got into the Ballet Body May because I enjoyed them so much.

Least favorite? Power hour, because I didnt do it.

Do you have any other health-related goals? (Diet, more sleep, de-stress, etc.) De-stressing and staying on top of my anxiety disorder are always number one. BUT due to huge life changes last night (SO proposed!! He wants to take me to the courthouse and I am SO HAPPY!) I really want to start paying attention to losing weight and getting in freaking fantastical shape.

  • I suck, Peanut. :(  I did only Monday last week, and the rest of the week I just ran and did yoga and pilates.

Didn't do any of your exercises.  I'm gonna do them this week.

  • This is great! I am late to the game but will definitely be joining in. I'm also doing the 30 day squat challenge, so hopefully with that plus this I will get my 30min of cardio that is recommended every day when ttc. I'll check in next week!

Sorry for the long response time, but I was at the studio :) and studying. :(

I currently only teach a couple ballet classes a week. I'm starting to teach yoga and pilates and am hoping to teach more ballet and pointe classes next year. I mostly took ballet, with a little jazz and modern thrown in there. I danced professionally for about 2 1/2 years, but quit. Now I'm trying to get back into it recreationally, share dance with others, and perform a little here and there with the studio.

I have to say that tap is so much fun. I never tapped when I was younger and just started last year, but I really enjoy it. I think it's because it's something new and challenging for me.

  • I'm late to the game tonight!

Accountability -- Be honest, did you do all of the exercises last week?

Nope, only 4 outta 6. I had a stomach bug half the week and really didn't feel up to working out.

Now that a few more exercises were added, what was your favorite exercise last week?

I enjoyed the 90 degree kicks - although I'm sure I look like a fool doing them!

Least favorite? Side plank - oblique crunches. I am just not that strong or that coordinated!

Do you have any other health-related goals? (Diet, more sleep, de-stress, etc.)

Mostly to loose weight and get healthy. I've been walking and running, and I'm still doing the push ups from Abtastic April. I did 50 today - and I don't want to loose it, cuz dammit I worked hard for that!
