One & Done: Only child

Parents expencting more then one...

we are expecting our first (and only) child in October. Both my hubby and i are only children. This baby sneaked in us but actually came at kinda a good time. we know for a fact that our lifestyle is a one child only one. His mom expects babies and mine feel that i am too young, i am 26 my husband is 36, to make the choice to tie things up after one. how can i explain to them that they need to be excited and grateful for the one they are getting not the 3 they seem to want?

  • I'm a huge fan of being blunt.  Sometimes, the truth hurts, but I would probably just tell her point blank, that you will not being having any more children.   I wouldn't go the light hearted conversation approach either.  I would sit her down and explain that you are only having one child.

Now if after all that she chooses not to listen, then that's all her, and you have every right to walk about when she starts talking about it.

  • You don't. Your sex life and reproductive plans aren't their business.

If they are rude enough to push you, you might point out that one and done worked so well for them that you are excited to follow their example.

  • It's really none of your parents' business how many children you have. And you do not owe them any 'explanation.' You are an adult and it is your (and your husband's) life together...so your parents don't get a say in things like that.

Sometimes I feel like the 'Oooh, I love babies and want heaps of grandchildren' cries are like a 4-year old whining that they want a pony.

  • Yeah, I'm in the "stop explaining" camp.  Go about your business and stop talking to them about it.  They bring it up and keep pushing?  You smile and say "thanks for your opinion" and then change the subject.
