Babies: 9 - 12 Months

gag reflex

Hi ladies!

LO is 9 months and he does not do well with anything that is not pureed. He puts everything in his mouth, of course, but whenever he swallows a small piece of anything he almost always starts choking. I stopped giving him little bites when he turned 7.5 months bc he just kept choking.. which is so scary - so i went back to pureeing everything.  Last weekend I had a friend offer him one of those cheerio type things that dissolve.  He ate one... i saw it turning "liquidy"... so i gave him another.  within a few seconds he was coughing, his eyes filled with tears and then he projectile vomited 4 times (like nothing I have ever experienced)  - it was so scary and he looked helpless...  Now I am afraid to give him anything but it seems like he is getting a bit old for purees.  I will be asking the pediatrician next week but wondering what your thoughts are in the meantime.  sorry this was so long... and thank you!

Re: gag reflex

  • Is it gagging or choking? Gagging is a normal part of learning to eat for babes. They have been on formula or BM for all of their lives.

DD did this. Ate purees until about 7 months. Tried puffs and Cheerios at 6 months and she'd gag- now she hardly gags at all!

Now she's on to chunkier food! Sometimes she gags still. But again it's her learning to eat and swallow and such.

  • Loading the player...
  • I used to cut puffs in half and give them to DD or steam carrots and apples and let LO try to pick up and eat!

soft chunks- see how that helps.

I could have written this myself! My DS is the same way, its like he doesn't "get" the whole chewing thing.  He was choking a couple weeks ago I mean like compltetely purple and couldn't breath I had to stick my fingers in there and get it out then projecticle vomit and screaming. VERY scary and frustrating.  He had really bad acid reflux and has always had eating issues so I am taking him to feeding therapy. Not sure if your LO needs that, but just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

This is my first time posting on the 9-12 board - but my LO is the same way at 12 months.  She has an apt Tuesday and i'm bringing it up.  She can eat puffs and the like just fine, but will gag and projectile vomit on just about anything else.  One gag and it's game over.  I'm thinking there may be sensory texture issues, or enlarged tonsils or maybe even a palate issue.

I guess my point is, you're not alone! I have a 1 year old who is still on purees.

    YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

I started my little dude on solids at 5 months. Cereal, pureed fruit, that kind of thing, and he was doing great. Then he caught a cold and the snot running down his throat made him gag even while drinking his bottle. And he's gonna be ten months old in 2 days and he still cannot eat without gagging. He'll do okay with cereal for a few bites and then he refuses to eat. And he's interested in eating because I tried giving him a rice rusk and he was all over it with those little teeth until a little piece broke off and he gagged until he puked. And it was like a man-puke. Oh, just awful. So I hear you. I'm going to ask his doc at this next appt in a week but as far as I've seen on the ever-reliable and completely-fact-based internet, it's not the most abnormal thing in the world for some babies to have really sensitive gag reflexes. I'm hoping that's just the case, because my child is a behemoth and he goes through formula like a frigging beast and that shh's not cheap!!

  • yup totally my son! hes 9.5 months and can't eat anything other then purees.  I have tried puffs, cherios, small chunks of food, toast, eggs, this morning small pieces of bananas, gaged and threw up everything.

the pedi told me that its not a concern till after a yr, but even then some babies can't eat table food till closer to 15 months.

although I have noticed that he does ok with small chunks (like crumb size) of some foods while at other people's houses/ out with friends.

I guess just gotta hang out for a bit longer
