iPhone in lieu of camera??

We had planned on getting a new camera before baby, but a ton of unexpected expenses have cropped up in the last few weeks (broken air conditioner, knee surgery for DH, car accident). Now to save money, DH is thinking that our iPhones might suffice. I'm skeptical though. What do you think? Would we regret it forever? I don't know much about photography... Would the quality of pics from a $250-300 point and shoot be way better than our iphone shots, or not really?

TIA!

Re: iPhone in lieu of camera??

  • The iPhone takes pretty good pictures as long as everyone is still when you take them.  If someone moves their arm, for example, it will be blurry.  Do you have a friend or family member who would lend you a camera?

I use my iPhone much more than my Sony. It was 400 point and shoot from several years ago. I like the convenience of being able to send photos as soon as I take them. And I always have my phone with me.

  • We bought a DSLR before Emma was born and it was the best investment we could have made. We don't have iPhones, but a real camera does take better pictures.

  • I dont know if you need to drop 300 bucks on a new camera.  We were just looking at best buy for a new one but for other reasons.  Mainly because the pics I took for my daughter's recital did not turn out well.  They had several options that would work well for taking pics of a new baby that were not that expensive.  Our Nikon Cool Pix is a good camera and will work until we want to drop 400 bucks on one with the zoom features that we would like for the next dance recital.  I personally would not rely on my phone for baby pictures.  Good luck!

  • We take tons of pictures with our Iphones, but the quality is not nearly as good as with our other camera. I agree that you don't need to get a great expensive one, but I think you should get one a decent regular camera.

  • Alright, I'm sold :) I would hate to miss capturing those precious early moments! We'll probably look for a middle-of the-line camera to get better shots. Thanks ladies!

  • I think it depends on what kind of pics you want to take and what you want to do with the pictures. If you want a few simple photos after the birth and during the first few months then iPhone is fine.

  • I love my iPhone but I couldn't live without my DSLR.  The difference in quality is significant especially in low lighting and with a moving subject.

I have a great DSLR and still take 90 of my pictures on my iphone.

This. I spent almost 1000 on my DSLR and lens. The only time I use it is for holidays. We use our iPhones for everything else. I have the best pictures from the OR with my LO that were taken with a phone. The newer iPhones have an 8 megapixel camera and shoot HD video. That is pretty comparable to most cheaper point and shoots.
  • I am pretty picky about photo quality and I will begrudgingly admit both the iPhone 5 and 4s have great cameras and I think you could probably get by with just it. The only situation its not he greatest is in low light. You should test it out for yourself, take a couple of pics now in different situations and see what you think. Look at the pictures on you computer (not just on the phone) or pay to develop a couple of them so you can see what you think of the quality. I also think you should look out for reduced prices on point & shoot. IMO there's no reason to spend $300 on a point & shoot when you can get a great camera (that just happens to be a couple months older) for often under $200.

  • My ex husband was a photographer and had really good equipment....I feel like the new iPhones take pictures almost as comparable to the equipment he had. You can also buy apps with filters that camera's have too. I am like you expenses came up and we are not buying a camera and just using our phones. :)

  • Honestly, it's about knowing how to use what you have. You could invest money into a nice camera (not a point and shoot, but a DSLR), but it's not *necessarily* going to get you better photos.

There are legit photographers who take amazing photos using only their iphones because they know to use the equipment, but they also know about lighting, exposure, etc.

DH is going to be the official picture taker.  He said he would prefer his phone unless I really wanted to bring the camera.  I'm starting to wonder if it would just be one more thing to keep track of.  Everyone carries their phones everywhere.

we have 3 digi cameras and we both prefer our Iphone's. The pics come out great and its quicker :)
  • I think my iPhone takes pictures just as good as my camera, although its nothing fancy. I just switched to a 5 and didn't have a 4, but the 5 has some settings you can mess with to make the pictures even better.
