New thyroid issue

I'm just 10 wks and Friday received a phone call from my midwife who said I have developed a thyroid issue. She immediately called in a prescription which I started taking the next day. Everything I read online says a hypoactive thyroid is a serious concern, especially in the 1st trimester. I don't know if this has been an issue since week one or truly just developed but am now nervous some damage could already be done. Has anyone else developed this during pregnancy? Midwife says its fairly common but everything I'm reading, women already had thyroid issues and were taking care of it prepregnancy.

Re: New thyroid issue

  • I'm considered hypoactive now since I had my thyroid removed. All of mine occurred prepregnancy. My dr did tell me that hypoactive is easy to manage during pregnancy. Just take the meds like you are suppose to. They will probably have to change the mcgs a few times to get it right for your body. You probably will need to have blood draws more often. I know mine is different from yours since yours was found during pregnancy, but my t and ps are with you that everything goes great.

I agree with quartermisses. I have hypothyroidism and was diagnosed right before my last pregnancy. I have been taking medication ever since. When they first diagnosed me they did a whole panel of blood tests, to confirm the diagnosis. I am being treated by my primary care physician, and have been the entire time. He checks my levels every 6 months because they were off for a little bit after my last pregnancy. Now they will be checking often because pregnancy can change things too. My OB referred me to my primary care DR, so I would probably ask more questions but wouldn't freak out too much yet.

I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid around 8 wks my last pregnancy and started treatment right away. Had blood tests every 6 wks or so and dose adjusted accordingly. Everything turned out fine. Thyroid really went nuts postpartum and had to increase dose. It's good that you're being treated and everything's probably fine, just make sure your levels are being monitored since they can change significantly throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Your levels might have been fine pre pregnancy and maybe only changed because of pregnancy, so you might have had no way of knowing any sooner. Now that I know, I had bloodwork done within days of my bfp this time and will test again soon.

  • I too have thyroid issues, however I was hyperthyroid (Graves disease), but other thyroid issues run all through my family.  I agree with the others that you need to have the full thyroid panel done to pinpoint the exact cause.  I would also ask to be sent to an endocrinologist.  It has not been my experience that endos only want to see people who cannot be managed by their primary care physician.  And to that end, not all endocrinologists are created equal, you need to do some research and find one that specializes in thyroid disorders.

Please don't be nervous about the thyroid issue hurting your baby.  I know lots of people who have had hypothyroid during pregnancies and went on to have healthy, happy pregnancies and babies.  It just requires a little more bloodwork, like once per month, to make sure you levels are okay and your dosage is correct.

    Good luck!

  • That scared me too in my 1st time cuz doc probably told me around 10weeks. So I was pissed that I was told late. But.... I got treatment and now my toddler is perfectly normal. She's going to kindergarten soon and is brilliant. So conclusion: don't worry about it.
FYI: diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the time which only lasted with that pregnancy. Didn't have any issue with my 2nd.
  • Thank you to everyone for the great info and advice. It appears I have a ton to learn, but I believe she tested my tsh levels which were at 13 and she said it should be about a 2. She did refer me to an endocrinologist, but they aren't able to see me until mid-June.

In the meantime, she called in levothyroxine and I'm taking 50 mcgs every morning. Everything I read says the first trimester is the most important to have your thyroid functioning properly since the baby relies on it until theirs develops around 12wks. I'm so nervous we caught this late.  AND I don't even know if it's the right dosage and won't know until mid-June.
