Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Is this what babies do before they crawl? Or just how LO gets around?

My LO is moving around quite a bit here recently although he does not go very far.  He is rolling and sort of pushing/scooting himself around on his belly.  The other day, he pushed himself backwards completely across the living room on the wood floor. He scoots on his behind some, too.  However, he does not "crawl" in the traditional way of what I think of as a crawl.  Is this what babies typically do before they crawl or is this just his way of getting around?

He is only 8 months and was a little early so I am not concerned about him being "delayed."  I'm just curious to know what to expect...

  • Mine is 7 months old and does pretty much the same thing.  Rolls across the room, scoots on her bottom, and scoots in reverse.  I think this is all totally normal. I'm enjoying watching her move but cherishing these last few moments before she's really mobile and I'm chasing her everywhere!

side note:  I see that your location says Houston.  I live in Houston as well so hi!

  • LO army crawled (usually backward) for a couple of weeks before she figured out she could get up on her knees and crawl. Then she reverted to rolling because it was faster. Now she is back to regular crawling. I think your LO sounds pretty normal!

DS1 did that - I called it a belly flop - until he walked, which was right around his first birthday.
  • Absolutely! DD did this for about 2 weeks before she crawled.
  • Yep! That's what my LO did right before he figured it out. I've been chasing him around ever since!

DD will be 8 mos on Saturday and she could care less about crawling!  She has people to transport her, and if not, she'll roll all over the place to get where she wants.  :)

  • Thanks for the responses!  Glad to here he is normal. And I guess I better start baby proofing because it sounds like he may be crawling anyday.

  • My baby crawled for the first time on friday, she did what your baby is now doing for about a month. She turned 8 months on the 2nd so it sounds like your baby will also be crawling very soon! Start baby proofing and enjoy it! Its so cute!
