Toddlers: 24 Months+

city mini stroller (on airplane!??) or other recs??

Hi,

I'm taking a trip to europe with my 23 month old this summer (getting him in JUST UNDER the "needs his own seat" age... Hope that's not totally insane of me!) and I think I want to get a new stroller for the trip.  We have a BOB jogging stroller (NOT portable at all and very impractical, if I'm being honest) and a chicco travel system stroller (it's a little bulky, too!).

I think that the city mini stroller would be a good one for airline travel but I'm also open to other ideas.  I like that it's lightweight and that it folds up compactly and easily.  I also think that it would be good on brick, cobblestone, etc. in europe.  Here are my questions:

1) Do you agree that a city mini is the best choice for my need(s)?  Is it worth the money?  What's the difference between the different models?  Should I buy used?

2) Will my 30 pounder be outgrowing it soon?  How long do kids stay in strollers anyway?

3) Do you have another recommendation for my needs?  I'm open to ideas!

Thanks in advance for any information or suggestions you can provide!

  • Look into the Chicco Liteways. They fold really small, are super light, they recline almost flat and have a pretty good umbrella.

We have a Baby jogger, not the city mini, but if the city mini folds similar it doesn't get really small.

Our Chicco has been on 13 flights and is still going strong. My dd is 3, 29lbs and still fits in it comfortably.

    Good Luck! Enjoy your trip.

Eh, I have the city mini and I love it but I don't know that I'd choose it as a travel stroller. I think I'd just get an umbrella stroller, honestly. But I've also never been to Europe.

It won't be any better on cobblestone/uneven roads than any other stroller. The wheels are plastic, not rubber, and not large. It's not an all terrain stroller. It turns wel because of the three wheel swivel design, but it doesn't push any easier on rough terrain; that's what air filled tires are for. The city select is the lowest model with air filled tires, I believe.

It folds easily but isn't necessarily light or compact as far as strollers go. It is convenient that it has the recline option and huge canopy, but is your toddler still willing to nap in the stroller? Mine sure isn't. Size wise, you're fine. DD is 30lbs and over 38" and has plenty of room.

Your choice, but it wouldn't be my pick for air travel.

  • Any of the MacLaren ones would work - we used our TechnoXLR last year when our DD was around 18 months in UK and Italy - it worked great on cobblestone and travels well.  We recently got a more compact MacLaren Volo - less than 9 lbs and comes with a strap.  The weight limit is 50lbs - the only caveat is that the seat does not recline but it's a breeze to travel with and DD does not nap in in most time.  You see tons of MacLaren in Europe.

The Volo is about $110 and the ones that recline are a little more $ but worth it in my opinion.
