Right sides weakness

Lauren has Down syndrome and has been working with EI for a year. She's 15 months old. She had OHS to repair her AV canal at 6 weeks old but it's been smooth sailing health wise since then.

I've noticed that she clearly prefers her left side, hand and foot, for months. The EI teacher brushed it off as no big deal.

We finally got insurance to cover private PT and she noticed right away that Lo has right sided weakness and now we're working on it.

What could that be from? I'm a RN so my mind immediately goes to a stroke. But could she really just prefer one side? I'm kind of lost here.

    Thank you! Now that you mention it, one of Lauren's eyes is worse than the other but I can't remember which. We go back to the ophthalmologist on Tuesday. I'll check my PMs!

    Eventually the vast majority of people will choose a side, but I was told that you don't normally see a hand preference before 3yr old (I think that was the age).  DS2, who has CP, was noticeably right handed at 6mos old (one of the issues prompting my concern actually).  He is 3.5 now.  My older son who turns 5 in a few days I still can't tell if he'll be right or left handed since he chooses to do some things with one and other things with the other.  You are clearly concerned so I would get it checked out.  I have no experience with DS so I'm not sure if this is something somewhat typical or if there is possibly something else is going on or happened.     DD has had a preference since about 2 months, I believe.  Through therapy it has improved, however!  Background- ventriculomegaly, poss. MD, and myopic eyes.  There is only a slight difference between her eyes.
