My friend is lending me her electric breast pump. I heard this is fine as long as I either sterilize the tubing or buy new ones. I forget which. Thoughts and resources I could turn to? TIA, ladies!
I would buy new tubing. I think you can get them from the medela website. If not sometimes specialty baby stores in town will sell them or perhaps you could get them from a lactation consultant.
Medela isn't a closed system, so it's actually not recommended for use by multiple people. That being said, if I knew the friend well and knew her to have a clean bill of health, I'd use it, but I'd definitely replace the tubing, the shields, and all that stuff... I wouldn't be comfortable just sterilizing it. You can buy direct from the Medela site, or just do a quick search on Amazon.

Medela technically says no, but it's commonly done among relatives and friends if you can be assured that there's no danger of previous improper use or communicable diseases. I've been using my friends Medela PISA and likely once I am done, we'll pass it along to my friends sister. Since the interior of the pump is not a closed system, body fluids such as BM can be sucked into the interior with improper operation, technically contaminating the pump. I've never had this happen while using the pump, but I am careful to prevent moisture buildup or BM from entering the air line.
You would need to replace all exterior plastic components such as the plastic tubing and the entire breast shield/valves/collection tubes assembly. There are multiple sizes for the breast shields so I'd recommend getting to know a local lactation consultant (LC) for help with the pump and BF issues, otherwise you can even find parts in the baby stores and at Amazon.
