Blended Families

I am mad

I have an 11yo SS.  He lives with his mom that lives about 1.5 hours away.  DH and BM were not married and never went to court for visitation or child support.  They have been able to work it out on their own since they split when SS was two.  DH has SS almost every weekend.  He does the drive back and forth every week, BM never brings SS or picks him up.

Since tomorrow is Mothers Day, DH and BM agreed that DH would bring our son back to his mom Saturday night (tonight).  Usually DH brings him back Sunday afternoons.  This way,  SS can be with his mom, and DH does not have to spend 3 hours driving (we have a 5 yo and 2 yo and are having my mom over tomorrow).  This is our usual set up: SS spends Moms Day with his mom and Fathers Day with us.

DH picked up SS yesterday after school and was all set to bring him back today... Only... His mom is not answering the phone or returning our calls.  SS now tells us that she went out of the state (like 15 hours south) two visit her mom for the weekend.

WTF?

Not only is this totally irresponsible and effed up, but instead of having a quiet Mothers Day tomorrow, DH will have to spend the day driving SS back and forth?

i am selfishly totally annoyed with this.  I have no problem with SS spending the day with us, but I was really hoping DH would take the younger kids out in the afternoon so I can get my toes done or take a nap. :-(

  • Did DH already confirm when he would drop off his son and BM left anyway? Then he can tell BM sorry but I have other plans and you can come to us or I will drop him off at school Monday morning or whatever else works for you guys.

  • Yup. DH and BM had confirmed that DH would bring SS back Saturday. Unfortunately, we can't bring SS right to school. He needs his book bag and uniform and would have to leave my house at 5am to get him home in time to change and get to school for 7:30 when school starts.

  • That's ridiculous. BM can come get SS from you guys.

Just curious - why is there an hour and a half distance between you guys?

DH and BM both lived in the city when SS was born. Years later when DH and I got married, we moved out of the city to the burbs, about 20 min north of the city. Then she got married and moved an hour south of the city. It also happens that the place she moved to is not easy to get to you have to cross bridges, there is lots of traffic, etc. DH does the trip just about every weekend.
