Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swaddle.. When to stop?

So my son is 4 months old and has yet to sleep through the night.. wakes at 130 and 5ish. He sleeps in a rock and play swaddled. So Sunday night he busted one arm out of the swaddle. So the next night I decided to not swaddle him... He slept ok but woke more to eat in the am at 12 2 3 and 5.
Last night I swaddled again... And he busted out from the bottom up to his elbows... It was really cute!
However now I'm torn what to do... Should I start weaning him off the swaddle? Maybe one arm out and the other in or just give up cold turkey and use them as sleep Saks?

Advice abd opinions please :

Re: Swaddle.. When to stop?

  • If he sleeps better swaddled, try a different swaddle, perhaps this one. We got a magic sleepsuit because DS was waking up and spending his nights trying to escape. It has worked really well for us. FWIW, we had to swaddle DD until she was 6 mos. It was overstimulating for her not to be swaddled. DS is much more laid back than her, so the swaddle isn't as important for him to calm down.

  • My DD started busting out of her swaddle too, but she still needs it to sleep. I ordered a swaddle strap from Amazon and so far it's been working great. It's pretty much impossible for them to bust out of.

  • My DS is 4 months old as well and sounds like he has the same waking patterns as your LO. I was nervous to stop swaddling but now I look back and I fought with the swaddle for way to long. I would get so frustrated with him escaping that I look back now and I should have just stopped when he started busting out of it. We recently stopped swaddling cold turkey and I've ordered a sleep sack. I would say my LO is sleeping no worse now without being swaddled and he may actually be sleeping better.

Honestly, I stopped swaddling both my kids early -- probably both around 4 weeks. My daughter has slept through the night since 6 weeks, and my son either sleeps through or wakes up once for a quick snack, which he started at maybe 3 months.

Try not swaddling and see what happens. Some kids love it, some could take it or leave it.

We also replaced the swaddle with the sleepsuit and it has been met with great success so far. DS is a sleep fighter so he jerks and squirms as he starts to fall asleep when I put him down drowsy but awake in the crib. The suit slows his movements down and allows him to put himself to sleep. He was fighting the swaddle so bad, and I was done trying to wrangle him back into one in the MOTN.

  • Once our LO started breaking out of the swaddle we switched to the sleep sack. I was too paranoid to swaddle him with a blanket once he started wigglining out of it. We were lucky that his sleep behavior didn't change when we switched to the sleep sack.

DD is almost 5 months and we are working on weaning her off her swaddle.  During the day we have her nap without it (although she only naps maybe 20 minutes at a time and maybe 3 times a day).  At night I keep her one arm out.  Our doctor said once she is rolling over she really shouldn't be in the swaddle.  I plan on not using it completely when we get back from vacation.  She seems to do fine with her one arm out.  Once in a while she will get the other arm out, but not very often.

  • We transitioned to the magic sleep suit for a month+ and we are working on transitioning out of that.  The sleep suit was great for that.
